Karen's Story

Hi, I went to the year 2000 party at Ken Hi. It was lots of fun. I saw people there who we had grown up with who weren't in our class and had moved away from the area. Then I went to the next reunion for our class, too. I never had gone to any reunions before that. I've been in touch with Susan Horwitz who moved to Israel almost 10 years ago. She also had been living in the Boston area and I reconnected with her about 20 years ago after her mother died. I'm also on Patty Condelli's email list. She has a cookie making company that she single-handedly runs from her house with her 96 year old mother. I just came back from a trip to Argentina and Chile and contacted Adrianna, our foreign exchange student, in Buenos Aires. She's an international art dealer! She was at the year 2000 all class reunion with Karen Jerome, her close friend who lives in N.J. I even remembered enough of my high school Spanish to get my point across when we were traveling (despite my having not studied or spoken the language much at all over all those years)! I did go to Syracuse and graduated from there. After that, I got my MEd. from Boston University in '69. I was living with my Syracuse roommate who also was going to B.U., but she got married and moved to N.J. I stayed in the Boston area where I got a job as a speech and language pathologist. I worked in the same school system for 35 years until I got sick of the paperwork and the overload. I took early retirement in 2004 and have been working with one little girl who is hard of hearing since the fall of 2005. It's the caseload I've always wanted! I take her across the street from her parochial school (10 minutes from my condo) to the public library. She is motivated and her family works with her. The best is that she likes me and is making good progress. The school system I used to work for employs me to do this since they don't have enough...Expand for more
staff to service her. She is going to the public schools next year, though. I'll miss working with her, but I do love being retired and doing what I want to do. I have a fantastic 2 bedroom condo with a 35' deck and a beautiful view overlooking one of Massachusetts' Great Ponds. I also have been President of the Friends of Spy Pond Park for 3+ years and that keeps me busy. The Town of Arlington, MA where I live doesn't have enough money to maintain the $900,000 renovation that was done in this park near my condo. And, yes, I'm still singing in a chorus, the Mystic Chorale. I also sing at the temple where I have belonged. I even had an adult bat mitzvah in 2005 with 5 other women aged 30-80! My mother had been living in Pittsburgh after selling our house in the 70's, 7 years after my father died in 1965. Since she had had Parkinson's disease for 20+ years, I moved her up here near me in 1994. She moved between nursing homes and assisted living situations while she was here and it was good to see her on a daily basis. The rabbi who worked in the town where she was when she passed away in 1999 supported me at that difficult time. I subsequently joined his congregation although I never had affiliated anywhere before that. The winter of 2004 I met a man who joined the temple choir. We got along well, had many mutual interests, and fell in love. We've been partners living together since the summer of 2005. We travelled together to France (great since he's fluent in French), South America, and have visited with his family a few times. He has been married twice, once divorced and once widowed. He has a 29 year old son who lives in Lake Tahoe, CA. I had never been with someone longer than 6 months-1 year before. So, I feel my life is full and am enjoying each day with gratitude. I'm glad to hear from you. What's been happening with you other than what you wrote? Karen
