Karen's Story

Life After leaving high school I rushed into marriage. Big mistake...but, I suppose if I hadn't made that mistake, I may never have met my current husband! We've been married for almost 23 years. We've actually been friends for 32 years. We have no kids together, but I do have two stepchildren and one step-granddaughter (I was there the day she was born...so I act like a real grandmother and spoil her rotten!). We live in Maryland, not far from the old stomping ground. Actually, Dave, my husband was living just down the street from Churchill, off of Georgetown Drive...talk about small worlds. We live in Laytonsville (not far from Olney if anyone remembers the area) with our two spoiled rotten cats, Simba and Peri. Dave retired 2 years ago and I'm looking to retire in 3 years. After leaving my first marriage, I landed a job in the Federal Government (hey, no wisecracks...some of us really do work hard!) as a low graded clerk typist. I would like to go back and find Mr. Deligati (sp?) and ask him to take away that D grade in typing class! The nerve! I started with the Food and Drug Administration and I'm still there today. I started as a secretary and moved into computer programming and analysis and worked in that field for several years until I got burned out. I took another job within the organization as a Program Analysis Officer (Sort of the Executive Officer for the organization) with responsibility in handling all the budgetary and administrative activities for the Office of about 1...Expand for more
70 staff. I then moved into a more senior position with responsibility for managing additional compliance and information system programs including continuing as the Exec Officer. I'm currently the Director of the Division of Risk Management Operations with responsibility in overseeing a variety of compliance related programs and analysis activities. I actually work in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health in their Office of Compliance. We oversee the the compliance and surveillance of the medical device industry...we're the COPS so to speak! I also manage other programs such as the Medical Device Recall Program, Medical Device Export Program, Field Program management, Medical Device Registration and Listing Program, etc. For the ladies out there who get their mammograms (if you haven't, just do it!), when you go to the facility to get it, you should see a sign or display that shows that they conform to FDA's Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA)...that's us! So, I'm looking to retire when I'm 55 after 35 years working for the Feds and can't wait to join my husband in retirement. We plan to do more traveling, volunteering and just hanging out together doing things we both enjoy. We're still very much in love! But, I do intend on doing a bit more sleeping! I have also picked up the quilting bug and really enjoy that creative process. I also belong to our local quilting guild and will get more involved in that group when I retire. So, in a nutshell, there you have it!
