Karen's Story

Whew! Where to start? I had no clue what to do after HS..so I went to a local Philly Advertising School for a year and then joined my dad in his small ad agency. I worked for another ad man for a short time, but looking so young and being kind of avant garde in my own strange, sad way, we didn't click on any ad ideas. So then I went to my dad's travel school for a year to kill time and found my niche! I was a corporate travel agent for over 30 years and was lucky to have travelled wherever I wanted. Unfortunately, lay-offs abounded after 9/11 so I took that time to home care my mom who developed Myastenia Gravis and COPD shortly after my dad died. In 2005, after suffering...Expand for more
for too many years, I had 2 spine surgeries. Five days after my 2nd surgery. my mother died. It's so weird how she always wanted me to be a nurse and I became one, indirectly and learned more about medicine than I ever thought. In April 2006, still recovering, my left hand was almost severed by my back neighbor's dogs, who dug under his fence to attack a puppy I was watching for another neighbor. The fun never ends Right now, unable to work, I'm helping care (with my boyfriend) my 95 y.o. uncle (who's in better shape than me!) All in all, despite medical problems, I'm really lucky. Come to think of it..I still don't know what I really want to do! Some things never change!
