Karen's Story
I am married to a great guy named Rob Utecht, who buys and sells college textbooks. We had a son, Will, in our 40s who has grown to be a fine man.
I joined the Air Force after high school. Trained at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and I spent 24 years as a histotechnologist (pathology lab). I enjoyed my work and it took me around the world, including Europe, Saudi Arabia, and Hawaii.
I went to Augustana College (now University) in Sioux Falls, SD, then seminaries in Columbia, SC, and Chicago. I went on to serve as a hospital chaplain alongside my work in the lab for a few years.
I met my husband on the island of Kauai, where our son was born. We moved to Florida so our families could get to know our son. My parents have since passed, so we are very thankful that Will got to know his grandpa...Expand for more
rents.
After returning to the mainland, God called me back to seminary to become a pastor. I went to school at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina with a year internship in Lehigh Acres, FL.
I have served congregations in Indiana, Illinois and am currently in Nebraska. Go Big Red (I’m supposed to say that per terms of my contract, lol.) One congregation joined me on a trip to Germany for our 175th anniversary. I was humbled to lead a service of healing and reconciliation at Dachau concentration camp.
At another congregation, I was honored to celebrate a joint 500th-anniversary service with several fellow pastors and priests and the Lutheran and Catholic bishops in southern Illinois.
I’m hoping to begin a doctoral program in biblical preaching in the next year or so.
