Karen's Story

Life has been both more wonderful and more awful than I could ever have imagined in high school. I could not in my wildest dreams have imagined how cool it would be to have sons; amazing enough as children, but even more amazing as grown men who I love and respect and call my friends. Nothing could have prepared me for the day my first grandchild was born. Something magical happened the moment I looked in to her eyes for the first time. I did not think it was possible to love anything so much! I was equally unprepared for the enduring pain of a marriage ending, or for the challenges of being a single Mom. Back in high school everything was so black and white. In the years since then I have learned to appreciate life's nuances and to accept that there are unanswerable questions and some questions with many possible right answers. lly remarry, I never thought I'd be a step Mom. I'd never thought I'd be in sales (beginning with roses out of a basket in restaurants and nightclubs, going on to yellow page advertising, and ultimately ending with insurance and investments). I never imagined loosing a mate to cancer, experiencing the death of a parent or a grandchild. I never knew how cool it was to have a dog, and how hard it was too loose one. And I never knew I'd really, really love to dance! I am not so different than I was then. I am braver now, more resourceful, I think. I still struggle with the same thirty extra pounds I did back then. (I'd be rich if I had a dollar for every pound I've lost and regained and lost again over the last 40 years). I look at my high school picture and I am a little bit sad; sad for the dreams that didn't come true for her, but happy because I still believe in dreams, and life isn't over yet!
