Karen's Story

Life Well, 26 years ago I never thought I would be living in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. But here I am. After high school I went to Towson State for a year to major in Art Education. Sometime during my second semester I decided to change course and become a medical secretary and so enrolled in Towson Stratford Business School. After graduation I got a job as the clinic coordinator for the Dementia Research Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and secretary to the director of the Schizophrenia clinic. I worked there for 5 years and during that time met and fell in love with a medical student (against my better judgement). In 1989 we got married and moved to Gainesville, FL for my husband to begin his general surgery residency. I was the Administrative assistant to the Chairman of Radiology at the Univery of Florida. Our daughter, Kendall, was born in April of 1992 in Gainesville. My husband and I decided that I would become a stay-at-home mom. In July '92 we moved to St. Louis, Missouri for our Plastic Surgery residency/fellowship at Wash U/Barnes hospital. I continued to be a mom and our son, Patrick, was born in December of 1994. In July of 1995, my husband took a job here in Murfreesboro, TN. We have lived here ever since. However, in February of 2001, my huband admitted to having an affair with his married nurse practioner (not the first). We divorced in Feb 2002, he and his nurse had a baby the next month in March. I'm very happy, not bitter in anyway, and frankl...Expand for more
y see is as the best thing that could ever have happened to me. I dabbled in a few different careers, wedding coordinator, interior decorating, and substitute teaching, to name a few, but have been painting murals and portraits for the past couple of years and love it. I remarried November 25, 2005 to a great guy named Tim Rice. My kids are in 7th and 10th grade and are very happy with the new addition to the family. My stepdaughter (18) recently moved in with us and we have a house full of animals, 2 cats & 2 dogs, and a farm full of horses, 10 to be exact with 3 on the way, 3 barn cats, a psychotic blue heeler and a fainting goat. My husband, daughter and I enjoy trailriding and my son and I enjoy football, as in NFL. I'm a big Titans fan and Patrick has many favorites, especially the Ravens, and we're both excited about Vince Young. Athough I miss Maryland, I love Murfreesboro. It's a wonderful place to raise a family. I try to get to Maryland at least once a year to see my brother and his family and to get my crab fix. I can only take Baltimore traffic for about a week. Workplace About a year ago, I returned to my artistic roots and began painting murals. From the time my paint brush hit the wall of the first mural, I knew I could be happy doing this for the rest of my life. 2008 is looking pretty good for my business. I just finished a ceiling in a $1.5 million house in a wealthy neighborhood outside Nashville and am booked for 2 murals in the same house.
