Karen's Story

Life After graduating, moved to South Florida and spent 36 years in Broward County (Fort Lauderdale area). Married in 1974, became Karen Morrison, had son Brian in 1974, Son Jesse in 1977, Daughter Nina in 1979. Divorced in 1984. Remarried in 1991 (became Karen Sockol) and my beloved husband Jeff passed away in 1993. Remarried again in 2005 and moved to western North Carolina May 29, 2006. One of the happiest days of my life. Hurricane Wilma changed our lives forever as we almost lost our lives, let alone our roof and possessions, living on fourth and top floor of a condo. We endured the eyewall of the hurricane and it was 3 hours of terror. South Broward county got the worse of this storm--worst storm to hit the county in 55 years. We are South Florida "refugees" as it has become a truly miserable place in which to live, besides too many hurricanes in recent years. Too hot, too crowded, too expensive, too many rude people. Also, sad to say, my husband and I were majorly discriminated against because we are white, don't speak Spanish and are Christians. It was especially sad for my husband, Todd, to leave, because he was born and raised in Broward County and most of his family still live in S. Florida. If some people have a problem with what I just said, oh well, I speak truth and am not afraid to and NEVER apologize for saying it. The shy person all of you knew me to be is the exact opposite. Nowadays I tell people I used to be majorly shy and they fall down laughing or choke on their food! Also, my two sons live in Orlando and Winter Park and my daughter 20 minutes east of Gainesville, attending UF--Gator country!! Nina is going for her Master's in education. By the way, North Florida ought to secede from South Florida, as it ...Expand for more
is still a fairly decent place in which to live. No grandchildren yet, but Brian, my oldest, married in November, 2005, 13 days after Hurricane Wilma struck and devasted Broward County (98% of which was without power)(we went without 11 days). The wedding was such a wonderful, and beautiful event and a most welcome change after what we went through. And now certain people in New Orleans are being charged with murder. Unless one has been in a real hurricane with its horrendous aftermath, one can never really know how CRAZY it is afterwards and how abnormal people become. Truly not themselves and besides themselves. When did this country become so greedy, judgmental and unforgiving? My 92-year-old Mom moved with us and is doing fairly well for her age. God bless her, she wasn't too frightened during hurricane Wilma as she endured bombings in Europe during World War II and claimed Wilma was nothing! Me, I almost passed out! Enough about hurricanes. So enjoying a cooler climate, with real four seasons and lots of big beautiful trees! We are 70 miles north of Charlotte near major mountains. So missed mountains and hills! My true calling in a nutshell? ACTIVIST. Erin Brockovich, Dian Fossey, Rosa Parks and Joan Root are my heroes. Anyone who stands up to, asserts themselves, and wins over those in power who are wrong and corrupt are also my heroes. Those who are true to themselves and others, have the courage of their convictions at sometimes the risk of their lives, and cannot be bought and are not ruled by money are the ones truly deserving of our respect and gratefulness. My second true calling: WRITING!! Linda Grande (who lives in Baltimore) and I will try to attend the 2010 reunion! Well, da-da-da-that's all folks!!
