Karen Frogner:

CLASS OF 1970
Issaquah, WA

Karen's Story

After graduation I went to cosmetology & barber school and worked in that field for 16 years in Bellevue. I didn't really like it as a career but the money and hours were good so I continued until I decided what I really wanted to do. In 1973 I married Gordon Frogner, from Redmond, and we are still married with two boys Joel (30) and Jesse (28). Joel is married and lives in Portland and they had their first child last year. So that makes me a grandma! Jesse is single & lives near us in Spokane. In 1985 my brother David became sick and passed on, but during a lot of time I spent in the hospital with him I decided what I wanted to do. So in 1985 I went to Bellevue Community College and became a registered nurse. During my last year of nursing school I went to work at Harborview and worked there after graduating. It was a pretty wild and crazy place but loved every minute of it. In 1989 we moved to Spokane, where I am from, and worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center until I took an early retirement in 2008. 12 years in the Cardiac Intensive Care, and the last 8 years in the Post Anesthesia Recovery Room (where you wake up after surgery). Although I liked nursing, like many nurses I ended up with several (6) back injuries and finally could not work any longer. So I am enjoying retirement, despite the back problems. My husband Gordy just retired yesterday (May 28th) from 32 years with the Washington State Parks, he started out at Lake Sammamish. We hope to start some more traveling now. After retiring I took up the card game Bridge and have been totally fascinated and frustrated at the same time with it. It is an incredibly involved game when played at the club level, but love the challenge, and hopefully it will help keep some brain cells working as I continue to age. We live in Nine Mile Falls (Spokane) in a house we built 3 years ago, with our three Boxer dogs. I also have a home business/hobby of making kiln formed glass that I sell at one of the gift stores in Spokane. I hope to make it to the reunion in August.
