Karen's Story

After high school I attended Northwest Missouri State for 2 years (hated every minute of it!!) then I became a mother and went to work full-time for the State of Nebraska. I stayed there for 20 years and quit shortly after my daughter graduated from high school due to the high level of stress in the job. Then worked for a printing company in Omaha for almost 18 years. I retired in March, 2010 at the age of 60. My daughter has blessed me with a wonderful son-in-law and 7 (yep, 7) beautiful grandchildren ranging in age from 14 down to almost 1. After retiring I moved from Council Bluffs to Falls City, NE to be closer to my daughter...didn't plan to be quite as close as I ended up...I bought a house right across the street from her family. It's working out very well, we respect one another's privacy, but are close enough to help each other out. There is nothing I love more than a visit from any one of the kids. My daughter is the joy of my life and I am very proud of her. She and her husband are excellent parents. She is a stay at home Mom who homeschools her children. They moved to Falls City in 2003 and I spent the next 7 years taking that 100 mile drive every 2-3 weeks and hating it! Loved spending time with them, but hated the drive. When she told me that she was having #7, I decided I was done working...I needed to be closer to her...and the kids. I knew tha...Expand for more
t finances would be tight if I retired at 60, but after crunching a lot of numbers, I decided it was worth giving up a little to gain being able to live closer to them. My house is a 4 bedroom house, but I only use 2 of the rooms as actual bedrooms, one is my office, the other is my craft/sewing room. I currently have 4 sewing machines and enough fabrid to open my own store. I'm working on organizing this room with the help of my daughter and her husband. Our plans for this spring include rippnig out the carpet and putting down tile flooring, building storage for fabric and craft accessories and building a work station for my sewing machines. My granddaughters are anxiously awaiting the day the room is ready...they all want to learn how to sew and I can't wait to get to show them how. . I still spend time in CB visitng my mother and my sister. My Dad and my oldest sister have both passed away. My Mom will be 90 in April and still lives alone in her own house. I've been lucky in that none of my family had moved more than about 2 hours from CB. We get together regularly at either my sister's or my niece's home. There are generally about 30 or so of us at all gatherings with well over half of those under 19. And there you have my story (in a nutshell). Nothing exciting, but I am happy with the way my life has turned out and can't really say I'd change a thing.
