Karen's Story
Life
I'm currently living in the northern part of San Diego County. I live with my two wonderful kids. (I can say that, cuz I'm the Mom!) My son just moved to Lake Tahoe. He joined the CA Conservation Corps and my daughter is a senior in high school. High school has sure changed since we went. The student population at my kids high school is, get this, 3200! Do you believe that?
I'm divorced after being married almost 20 years. It truly is a friendly divorce. We get together for dinner every now and then. We did the divorce ourselves! No lawyers!
College
After High school I went to Cal Poly in SLO. I graduated with a double major in Food Industries and Home Economics. After I graduated I moved to Tahoe for the summer. My summer lasted 7 years! I worked at Harrah's in South Lake.
Workplace
While I was in Tahoe I worked in the cashier department, in a seafood rest...Expand for more
aurant and I ended up in security as a supervisor. This experieince led me to my next job as a security manager for Broadway Dept. Stores. Have you noticed that these jobs don't have anything to do with my college education? I worked at Broadway until my son was born, then I stayed at home. When my son was in Kindergarten, I knew I wanted to teach. Back in HS I wanted to teach, but my counselor, who shall remain nameless, told me there were too many teachers and not enough jobs. She told me to choose another career path, so I did. Now I am an elementary school teacher working in a library! I love teaching and I have been in the same school district for over 10 years. I started off as a substitute teacher while my kids were young and then I went back to school and earned my teaching credential. I've taught first grade and Kindergarten and now I teach K through 5th.
