Karen's Story

After graduating from Alvernia, my father rushed to get me into "any old college" which turned out to be Northeastern Illinois University. I attended for 2 1/2 years and in my sophomore year was voted Sweetheart of the Lamda Pi Chapter of the on campus TKE fraternity. It was a pretty big deal at the time, crown, front page of the paper, tuxedo's etc. Sort of shallow, really, but the dance was fun! I met my first husband in this fraternity at Northeastern and although he did graduate, I did not. I spent more time playing pinnocle in the cafeteria than studying and partying was a way of life. I was drawn into all the activity of "corporate and financial life" on La Salle Street downtown, where I worked my way up from an insurance agency "girl friday" to supervising a unit of people at Combined Insurance. I got married to the TKE guy (for 1 1/2 years) and got divorced. What can I say, it was the 70's....rebellion! I met my second husband at Combined and moved on to work at a large employee benefits consulting house, Alexander and Alexander (now Aon) where sex discrimination was rampant. I started an in house women's network and at the end of 1 1/2 years, the department head was demoted; women started to get promoted (treated equally) and the corporate organization out of Baltimore revised their job posting and promotion procedures so women could advance in the organization. I am most proud of this work because it caused real and positive change for women in the company across the entire U.S. Hummm, did Alvernia get me thinking this way?? You bet! I went to work for Midas International and returned to school to get my B.S.B.A. from Elmhurst College in 1985. In 1987 my second husband took a job in Connecticut and we relocated. It was to have been our second chance; you see, he had cheated and I was foolish enough to say sure, you deserve a second chance! Wrong! Neve...Expand for more
r again! So, 3 years into Connecticut he was doing it again and left. We had a "macmansion" which we sold, dissolved the country club membership and I was on my own. It was a shock. I bought a house of my own and went back to school to get an M.B.A. from the University of New Haven. I graduated in 1998. This enabled me to interview at higher levels and I became Director of Human Resources for a large German owned company. Before that, I was Director of Programs and Administration for Risdon Corp., a cosmetic packaging company. These jobs allowed me to travel internationally, so I have been to Paris, Germany, Austria, Switzerland....all on business(with some fun on the side!). I lost each of these jobs due to corporate buy outs, job restructuring, so I now am the Pension and Benefits Manager for the City of Waterbury, Connecticut! We are the 5th largest municipality in Ct. and the City's history is one of total corruption and political pay offs! We new people are helping to rebuild. I have not had this much fun in years! I also was on the Board of Directors of a battered women's shelter. That was very rewarding. I learned to play golf and fulfilled a childhood dream of owning my own horse. His name is Beau Dandy. And, in 2004, I got married again! Yep, that is 3 husbands, but who is counting? It took me this long to get it right. Tom moved into my home. We have 2 1/4 acres, I have had the horse for the last 16 years .. I ride English; hunt seat (that means over fences, although as I have gotten older the fences have gotten lower!). We have two rescue kitties and right now, life is pretty good. I won't make the 40th reunion, but remember Alvernia fondly and particularly some of the teachers who helped me survive through some personal troubles. So, Happy 40 years to everyone since High School! Time really does go by in a second. It seems like yesterday.....
