Karen's Story

Life I live in Alexandria, VA near D.C. I volunteer as a naturalist at a wetlands wildlife sanctuary. I teach kids about ecology. I have created a children's program that incorporates African dance/storytelling about wetlands and its denizens. It is an interactive program and the kids love it! I am also a singer/songwriter. I created a coffeehouse at the park where we have great open mike nights. I dream of being in a musical group that makes a wide variety of music. I love music! Celtic, world, opera, classical, jazz, hip hop, emo, techno, blues, some pop, if it's good , it's good! I'm basically the same person I was in high school- an originator of ideas, "let's put on a show!" I also have been freelancing as a life coach for a number of people. I've been doing that all my life anyway! My husband, John, works as a civilian for the DoDefense and is awaiting hopefully for an appointment by the new administration . He could really shake it up and make some changes in there- especially as an advocate for the vets. That will keep us in the D.C. area for another 4 years or so. Guess I'll be in my 60's by the time we make it back to our beloved Monterey, CA !...Expand for more
For the SVHS people, I went to Monsey, Fleetwood and SVJH and then instead of ninth grade I went to a German school for a year in Wiesbaden and lived with a German family who knew my German Dad. When I returned, we immediately moved to San Jose , CA as Dad took a job with IBM. I'm going out to California, San Jose, in August for my 40th HS reunion there. I had a wonderful group of eccentric pals, some are still rebelling and won't show up! I was a co-founder and editor of the school's first literary magazine. Also formed a folk-rock band with some pals- our biggest moment was a gig for one nite in the Haight Ashbury! We thought we had made it! Went often to the Fillmore and was lucky to attend the Monterey Pop Festival. I'm a music junkie to this day. I remember being "skeered" when Led Zep broke out into "Whole Lotta Love" the first time I saw them. I was so innocent! BWAH! I went to college at UC Santa Cruz in the redwoods. It was an amazing time. I had a few sweaters, two pairs of jeans and one pair of hiking boots and was a happy camper! So much for college wardrobes back then! Can't wait to see my old Spring Valley pals from Elem. and JH in November.
