Karen's Story

It is 2009 and life is pretty good. I have been married for 24 years to a wonderful man named George Guenther who graduated SCHS in 84. He was in the Navy and we moved around with him where ever he went but never left the states. George has now retired from the Navy and is now a Police Officer in Great Lakes, IL. I have two great kids and a wonderful job. I would love to live closer to home but you know what they say, ¿Once you leave California you can never afford to come back¿ I have found that to be true. Once my husband retired from the Navy in IL we had to go where the jobs are so here we stayed. Not too bad, we have all four seasons and a beautiful countryside to look at. We could use some family around here though. Meagan, our daughter, is 23. She graduated college at NIU with a degree in Kinesiology. She was a three sport athlete in high school and did the field events in college at division 1 level. She will be getting married to a great guy named Aaron who is a dietitian for the VA hospital in Indiana where they live. We are all real busy right now with wedding preparations. Dang prices have gone up since I got married! Adam, our son, is 21. In high school he was a wrestler and football player. Right after high school h...Expand for more
e joined the Marine Corps. He was stationed in Japan for two years where he did a detail in Iraq and made it out OK. He is now in the process of moving to Camp Legume in North Carolina where he is being told that they will be detailed to Afghanistan as part of an artillery unit. Please say a prayer for his safe return. As you can see both George and I are now empty nester¿s. It was hard at first but George and I are finding that starting early with kids can have its rewards too. We are hoping once our kids settle down that they will move closer to home. Only time will tell. Who would have thought with my grades in high school that I would end up as a Budget Analyst in Civil Service, but it works. Being in Civil Service I have been able to move with my husband without losing a job or seniority and it has been a real blessing. I really love my job and work with a group great guys. They are all Environmental Engineers who get really crazy sometimes, so I fit right in. My department makes sure that the Navy stays environmentally compliant, as well as develops and head projects to clean up old dump and artillery sites, very interesting. I only have 13 years till retirement, what can I say age happens and so does life, AINT IT GREAT!!!
