Karen's Story

At Bullard, I was very quiet, shy and introverted. If that isn't how you remember me, I'd love to know what kind of impression I made. I went to Fresno State, then San Jose State, and graduated in 1966 with a BA in Art. After another year I completed my Secondary Education Credential, and went right to work in Mountain View, CA at Awalt High School, which changed names in 1980, to Mountain View High School. I taught art for 32 years, 28 of those years as the art department chair. I was the first female staff member to break the dress code of dresses and skirts, by showing up in a polyester pants suit one fine Spring day. While it is hard to imagine the controversy that caused in today's world, I none the less was called into the principal's office to "explain myself." You can ask me how that ended up, at the 50th reunion, which I will be attending for the first time. Because many of my students over the years went on to become accomplished artists in multiple industries, one of my favorite activities has been to sit through the entire credit stream at the end of a movie, and look for names I may recognize. These former student's range of accomplishments have been from "darling" of the avant-guard art scene in New York City, to web designer for Stephen Spielberg, and of course being in California, some ended up in the animation industry working for PDI and Pixar. I say, any excuse to see an animated film! Along the way, and over the years, I've stayed away from the BHS Class of 1962 reunions simply because I didn't want to arrive with a fictional story about my life, and I wasn't brave enough, and perhaps the culture wasn't quite ready to receive me without judgment. At least that's what I felt, and told myself. But the time has come, and I will ...Expand for more
be bringing my lady spouse with me. We were legally married in the window of opportunity in 2008, one day before the election results which returned all gay folks yet again, to citizens with limited access to civil rights. We have been partners for 24 years, and known each other 46 years. Of course I had a starter "marriage" just like everybody else, but with a woman, which lasted between the ages when I was 19 to 31 years old. Our split was mutually agreeable, and being a boomer in the 60's and 70's, living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I got to experience everything that was available and held in high esteem: sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Mostly, however, I've lived a rather financially conservative and socially liberal life in the Bay Area. I left Fresno in 1964, and only returned briefly to visit my parents, but never on good terms. They both have passed away, and I've come to terms with the disinheriting will, my brother who wouldn't even the score for me, and realized that the gift out of this nightmare, has been my ability to take care of myself in all kinds of circumstances. I've lived in suburbia all my life, and am about to embark on an Artist's Quest with my partner, Elise. We plan to take the next year to live in Portland, Oregon, with minimal "stuff"–we're both collectors–, and being both artists, intend to do nothing but live a creative life, focusing on painting, morning lattes, walks in the city, in the parks, simple dinners, and return to the soulful life each of us though we were going to have, but didn't. Being retired, having planned well, we are both enjoying the moment with friends, our cat Luna, and waking up to the real enchantment of life. And so looking forward to a shared life living our artistic dream.
