Karen's Story
When I graduated from High School my parents both wanted me to go to college at Texas Tech. That's where they met each other and they both graduated from there. I was really wanting a break from school so I got a job working full-time (thinking I'd just work 1 year then go to college). I really liked my job and decided I didn't want to quit then in April 1985 I met Doyle who I have now been married to for almost 22 years. We got married June 1987. We have 5 wonderful children. My daughter Sarah, just turned 20 on May 26th. My son Sean will be 18 in Sept. and will be a Senior next year. I'm just amazed at how quickly the time goes by. I decided when Sean was born to quit my full-time job. I just felt that I wanted to make my family my priority over my career and I'm still a "stay-at-home" mom. Our other 3 sons are Joshua who is 11 and will be in Middle School next year (6th grade). Then we have Ryan-8 and Jeremy-6. Ryan and Jeremy are like "2 peas in a pod" as the saying goes. They share a room and it just seems like what one is doing, the other is right there doing it too. They play together all the time. Of all our kids Jeremy is the most competative. He plays soccer and it is extremely important to him to win. And when we are looking at his graded papers he's not happy unless the grades are 100's or A+'s. Jeremy is just about to finish 1st grade. I'm not sure if I should laugh or be worried. He's really sweet though. I love my family and being a mom. We go to church in Keller and we've been pretty active there. ...Expand for more
I miss my Mom. She passed away a few years ago of cancer so I'm trying to teach my family how precious life is and not to take the people we're with for granted. Something that I love doing is learning about my family history. To some degree, I guess I've always been interested with it. I remember I always loved looking through my grandmother's old pictures which were taken in the late 1800's- early 1900's. I remember at night asking my dad to tell me stories about his childhood. He's amazed at what I still remember today that he had forgotten telling me. I regret not having that same bond with my mom as a child. But I love my mom and miss her so much. I wish I could tell her about the woman she was named after. My mom's maiden name was Laura Ellen Horn and she was named after her grandmother (Laura Ellen Clark). My mom never knew of her because apparently this lady died very young. Her grandfather remarried later and that's the only grandmother my mom knew. I recently found out that in our "Clark Family" there's a famous country musician related to us. His name was Ernest Tubb. I think my mom would have thought that was pretty neat. My mom was a great mom. I think it was probably hard having a "strong-willed" daughter. It wasn't until I became a mom myself that we really became close. As a mom I started understarding her more and had so much more appreciation. I'm planning on going to college in the fall and taking the classes online so that I can still not let it get in the way of my family. I hope it goes well.
