Karen's Story
LIFE
I'm married to a fellow "shaw dog" since 1991, we have a teenage daughter, who is also a "shaw dog" and we still live in the area. As a matter of fact, we live just a few short blocks up the hill towards the Foundation for the Junior Blind.
SCHOOL
I did well enough to graduate high school, but school was never my thing. I wasn't part of any "scene" at school and kinda kept to myself mostly. I joined the German Club, Pep Squad, the gymnastics team and even participated in Art Production Club, which made the posters and banners for special events, home games and talent shows. Except for the Pep Club, the groups were all pretty small, so I felt comfortable in those groups.
COLLEGE
I went to Trade-Tech after high school for about a year and a half and then to West L.A. College for a brief stint. I even studied Fashion Merchandising at a private design school, which no longer exists. I had just a few credits to complete, but I had been attending classes eight hours a day on the two days I was off from my full time job for three years, with no car. Let's just say, I was very tired and my last year, I almost never slept. I was burnt out and quit. Oh, how I wanted to finish and get my degree, I just couldn't!
I've taken a few classes here and there.
I studied to be a manicurist and believe it or not, completed the course, went to board and passed. I received my license in 1994. I worked at a couple of salons, but that didn't hold my interest.
I've been fortunate enough to take time off here and there to be a stay-at-home mom through the years. But, I eventually get bored with staying home and have to get up and find a job.

apy course for my practitioner certificate. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I wish I had discovered this profession, at least, 10 years ago. My husband says, since I started taking classes, I don't seem as stressed and don't fly off the handle as much anymore. I think massage has helped me find my center. Besides, when I was a little kid, I always liked helping someone or teaching someone something. So, it did suit my personality. Didn't know then I could parlay this in to a career that makes me happy. Go figure!
If anyone is interested in treatments, please be sure to contact me here at Classmates and perhaps we can arrange an appointment at your location or mine.
WORKPLACE
I was last a Receptionist/Admin Assistant at a CPA business management firm whose clients are primarily in the entertainment industry of film, television and music. They had some well-known clients. If I dropped names, they would have to kill me! The people who worked there were off the chain, especially around four o'clock! For the most part, they were very cool and laid back, they also didn't even have a real dress code.
The clients were for the most part cool and interesting and then of course, we had some who were certifiable! I can tell you one thing, I liked this job better than the previous one. The people at the job prior, were on an ego trip of the greatest magnitude. Last I heard, most of the employees left the company, very unhappily! My cpa job was just a couple of blocks away from the prior job, so I didn't have to make a big change in my commute. I made more money and great perks.
Military
I was never in the military, but I married someone who served for six years in the late 70's!
