Karen's Story
Life
I am a 2nd grade teacher at Laurelwood Elementary School in Santa Clara, CA. After graduating from Cal Poly, SLO in '85, I married Kevin Spinks (who graduated from San Jose's Leland High in '81& Cal Poly in '86). No picket fences, but we do own a house in Santa Clara, have two wonderful teenagers: Eric-born in 1990 and Brittany in 1993, and a spunky yellow lab/Saluki mix named Max. When I turned 40 I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up an proudly earned a teaching credential as well as a Masters of Eduacation Degree in '03. I'm a "soccer mom" with both kids involved in year-round competitive soccer and a husband soccer coach/team manager, as well as a Girl Scout Leader, Boy Scout merit badge counselor, PTSA board member and swim team parent.
College
After a year of living at home and attending San Jose State University, I transferred to Ca...Expand for more
l Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA where I graduated with a BS in Child & Family Development in 1985, then 15 years later, went back to school to earn a teaching credential and along the way, earned a Masters of Education degree in 2003.
Workplace
I remember my 1st job scooping ice cream at Swensen's, working for Mr. Nipple, in the Cupertino Oaks, then on to selling tickets at the Oaks theater- I have come a LONG way, after being the Avis Rent A Car girl at the (tiny) SLO airport, over 5 years in the banking industry- working my way from teller to Northern California's Senior Training Instructor, after becomming a "mom", the most important job anyone could ever hold, I ran my own home daycare business for 10 years, along with a stint of selling Discovery Toys, to currently being a 2nd grade teacher. At 40 yrs of age I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grow up!
