Karen's Story
Life
I returned to my birth-State (Michigan) for college right after graduation, and except for two extended sojourns in California, I've been here ever since.
UPDATE: We just moved to Florida - the winters in Michigan finally got to us! We are living on the Dundee Ridge - the only hilly spot in Florida. It has been in the 80's almost continuously since we got here in mid October (2001) I love it!
I completed a B.A. in English Lit in 1970, an M.A. in Interpersonal Communications in 1974, and an M.A. in Guidance and Counseling, (a job requirement), in 1980. In 1978, I married a wonderful man named Matthew Doutre, whom I had known for many years. Matt spent his early career in Electronics, but following an injury at work he went back to college and got a degree in Psychology and Multi-Cultural Counseling. He is working as a Social Services Specialist for the State of Michigan.
We were unable to have any children, so after a long run with fertility treatments,(I hope none of you had to go through that - it was hell.) we decided to adopt. We chose not to adop...Expand for more
t an infant, so we got involved in foster parenting with an eye toward adoption. In 1995 we were lucky enough to have three siblings placed with us who later became available for adoption. Matthew is now 16, Alizabeth is 15, and Thomas is 13. Somewhat later we adopted their litle brother Edward, who is 12. So we are now the parents of four - Yikes!
I would like to talk to any of you grads of Marymount. I am particularly looking for old friends Phyllis Gruss and Rosie Gruss (both class of 1965). I would also be interested in talking with any of you who have fostered or adopted children.
A Sad Update: My precious husband of twenty five years died suddenly and unexpectedly 12-28-03. So now I am a single mother of four. We Floridians have been through five hurricanes since 8-04, Three of which went through our area and did significant damage to our home. I was able to get the roof fixed, but contractors are so busy that the other repairs will probably not be done until early 2005. Hope you all have had a better year than I have had.
