Karen's Story
Life
It's been an intersting and hard road since high school. I went right into working in hospitals for about 12 years watching EKG monitors for heart patients coming out of CCU into a "step-down" unit. After being cooped up in that atmosphere, I decided I wanted to go into delivery work.
I worked as an independent courier for over 7 years in Houston, and due to a lack of sense, moved to Pflugerville with my, then girlfriend, and got stuck there, er, here. Sigh. I finally landed a job with Fedex Express at the end of 2005. I deliver for them in the early morning hours and sometimes help with the mid morning stuff.
When I first started at FedEx, I was also working with Shadow Cats Rescue in its sanctuary for about 70 cats, back then. Due to the debilitating arthritis in my knees, a year and a half later,I decided it was time to talk to the ortho surgeon about getting a fresh start on my knees. Dr Schwertner of Georgetown Orthopedics, after several years of trying all we could to stave off surgery, listened to my wishes and replaced both knees..one in Oct. 2007, and the other in Nov. 2007. ths off from FedEx and hed resigned my position at Shadow Cats. With the intention of having my owm pet sitting business, once I was able to get around, again. I took my full ninety days off from FedEx to rehab, then after a couple of months of just driving, I did start my pet sitting business.
In my own home I have 19 cats and two dogs. They were all rescued except for a few that were my fault for not getting a mom cat spayed in time. The dogs were rescued from my FedEx station. I thought about just fostering them, but they remain with me. If anyone knows of someone who has room for one of them, and is willing to put quite a bit of time into training him, I have one of the two that would love to "be his own guy". He and his brother have Alpha issues and cannot be together anymore. They are both happy individuals, but not happy siblings. He and one cat that the other cats pick on are roommates, so he's not completely alone all the time...it works out well. The cats raised the dogs from puppyhood, so the dogs have a liking for the cats and also think they are part cat. Quite and interesting group of fur kids.
