Karen's Story
Life
After leaving high school I spent 15 years working on Capitol Hill for several different members of Congress. Received my bachelors degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland at night (took 8 years!) In 1983 started working for the U.S. Information Agency. led to a job as computer networking engineer in 1988. In 1999 USIA was abolished and the remaining bureaus consolidated into US Department of State. I retired from U.S. Department of State after 35 years of government service in 2003. Presently living in Gaithersburg, Maryland with my husband, Tom, of 20 years.
