Karen's Story
Life
In 1998 I moved back to Arizona to be near my family. I had 5 good years with my parents before my dad passed away. It comes so quick guys so take every opportunity to be with those you love. Now I visit the Valley weekly to chauffeur Mom to her appointments and do lunch.
I lived one of my High School dreams of designing and building by hand my own house in Clarkdale AZ. (21 miles west of Sedona) My husband and I framed our first wall the weekend of July 1,2000. We worked weekends and anytime we could play hookie for 30 months.
Since my retirement from the Optical field in 2005
(29 yrs), I spend each day working to build houses for Habitat for Humanity of which I serve as the Executive Director for the Verde Valley communities of AZ. I have been active with this worthwhile organization for 8 years now. First as a construction Volunteer and for the past 6 years on various committees. In October of 2004 I was asked to take over the helm as Director. In June of 2006 our affiliate opened a Home Improvement ReStore in our community (New and used building supplies thrift store) and I have had such a blast....Expand for more
Who knew building supplies could be so much fun! We are currently building House #10 in Rimrock, not bad for a little rural affiliate!
At night I enjoy the dark skies as an amateur astronomer. My husband even built our own personal observatory. In the case of telescopes, bigger is better, our largest telescope is 14.5 inches in diameter.
In my spare time I have picked up a new hobby of designing and making quilts. I started assisting my mom making quilts for the Phoenix local homeless and children's shelters on behalf of my family church St Andrew Lutheran. (Mom still lives in our same house on Cholla St and the church in next door) . I have recently begun entering my creations in my local and county fairs and have placed first in my divisions. I even won an honorable mention at the State Fair of AZ..
I hope everyone will update you information with Randy Patterson (class of 1977) or leave info for me to update in our class database.
