Karen's Story
This is a very long story but I'll try to make it "shorter so to not bore you or if you have more important things to do than read this.
After graduation I went to URI. I became involved with anti-war activities, Soviet Jewish issues and anything related to Israel. Had a great time until I became bored after sophomore year. Went to Tel Aviv U (in Israel) for the year and fell in love with Pawtucket boy, Sandy Trachtenberg. (another activist) We Married on the day of URI graduation and moved to Framingham, MA . I worked as an abortion counselor at Preterm in Brookline while Sandy worked on a master's at Brandeis.
After his graduation, we moved to the little city of Utica, New York for two very cold years. I started graduate school at Yeshiva U in social work going to school during Manhattan summers.
Sandy and I moved to Berkeley CA when YU offered me a placement. After receiving my MSW, I took a position as Assistant Director for UC Berkeley Hillel Foundatioon ...Expand for more
( the Jewish student and community group on campus). I Fell in love with Northern CA and decided to make it my home.
In May, 1983, Sandy died suddenly in his sleep from a condition that causes Iscemia ( a silent heart attack).
Three years later I married Bruce Furman from Southfield MI. We left Berkeley while he returned to study electrical engineering at UCLA. I worked with convicted gang kids during those 3 years.
We returned to N. California as we felt our values and lifestyle were better suited in the San Francisco Bay Area.
We moved to Palo Alto because Bruce was an engineer and the famous Silicon Valley is here. (About 20 miles from San Francisco and Berkeley.)
I have worked with a very large variety (ethnically and socio-economically) of people in the field of psychotherapy and life coaching throughout my career.
I became a mom in 1995 ( Aryeh Lev) and 1998 (Talya Eliana).I have been able to work part time in my own private practice since 2003.
