Kari's Story

Life Hi Warriors, Well, I been really busy since the 20 year reunion. I have been changing my entire career. From teacher to restaurant owner/operator. After graduation I went to Northeastern State University and Graduated to become... a Teacher...duh. I taught at Mounds High School for 3 years, Tulsa Junior College for 2 years, Tulsa Technology Center for 9 years, and a year at Byrd Middle School, before getting a job at Bixby Alternative High for 2 years. I have been married to Bobby Brummett for 18 years now and have a 24yr old stepdaughter, Christen and 12yr old son, Luke. I am very happy. I live in Bixby on 1 1/2 acres. I decided after 17 years of teaching that it was time to make a change. In November of 2007 I opened KariOkie Cafe & Bakery in downtown Bixby. I put my love for music and Karaoke with Mom's awesome Food and Bakery items. She went back to school and became a Pastry Chef and is at the cafe fulltime now. We were featured in The Tulsa World Spot by Scott Cherry and voted one of 2 favorite 2008 Bakery & Cafe. Come see us! 918-366-9444. See ya soon, Kari College NSU was and I believe still is the best college for someone who wants a social life... but would like to keep in mind that it is important to graduate! I loved it. Being just over an hour from home made it far enough to seem like I was "away" at school, but close enough to come home whenever I needed to. My first roommate was luck of the draw (since Stacy went off and got married...my fault-I did introduce them). Kelly is still to this day my best friend. middle of a conversation. I was really lucky when I got assigned to her room. Most of my great memories of college was due to the fact that Kelly and the girls at Haskell hall were so entertaining! It makes me smile just thinking about it. Workplace I was the Math Specialist at the Broken Arrow Campus of Tulsa Technology Center for the last 9 years. I really enjoyed applying math to real world work whether it is binary numbers for computers, trig for machining, or ratios and proportions for Cosmetology. My stepdaughter became a licensed cosmetologist from Tulsa Tech on my campus and is now the Director of Clary Sage in Tulsa along with pursuing her degree as a Dermatologist. She competed in the National Leadership Competition in Kansas City and received 7th place in the nation in Prepared Speech Competition. I have already had one student in class who informed me that I graduated with their mom.... boy, does that make you feel old! But I really do love working with students. They sure make the world a different place...each day. I decided to return to the more traditional classroom in June 2004 and took a teaching job at Byrd Middle School for Tulsa Public Schools. It has been great being able to use all the real world examples I acquired at Tulsa Tech to make 8th grade Pre-Algebra and Algebra more relevant to my students. I worked at Byrd for one year and then I was given the opportunity to take a job at the Bixby Alternative Center for Bixby High School. I loved it! I just felt like it was time to step out and do something new. So I opened KariOkie Cafe & Bakery in downtown Bixby. Come see us. 918-366-9444
