KARIM's Story
School
Throughout my primary and secondary education there were several teachers that were inspirational, however only two that played a pivotal role in assisting in my overall development. At Hawthorne Ave it was my 8th grade teacher Mr. Harry Wheeler who would also endeavor in an unsuccessful bid to become the City of Newark first African American mayor. During high school my favorite teacher and role model was Mr. Thomas Benjamin. Not only did this educator provide excellent instructions, he coupled the lessons with an empirical approach.
College
My academic background includes a number of colleges prior to successfully completing a degree program in 2005. My academic quest has taken me from Essex County Community College to the long closed Upsala College; several military schools and finally on to Columbia Southern U. I have a streak of cynicism in me about graduations. Almost up to the last minute, I had not made a final decision about attending my college graduation. In my viewpoint it was totally pointless. For me it was just a ceremony, and as far as I was concerned they could simply mail my diploma. My parents, however, had quite a different idea about graduation, and in the end, I went. Now I think I have a better sense of why it's important to mark the milestones. I celebrated all of my graduations with my friends and family as a small group, ...Expand for more
but if the diplomas were all mailed out without a word, we might lose that strong sense that the concept of university is indispensable, and worth supporting. I believe that it is achievable to be self-educated, but barely possible, and even difficult to translate book knowledge into work skills or an essential skill-set without training by others. We gather at the important milestones so that everyone can celebrate how important it is to be together as a university.
Military
It was after completing and entering my 3rd year at college that I decided to join the US Army Reserves. Like many others before me, I signed off on the "dream-sheet" but have never regretted making this decision to serve my country. I embrace the concepts upon which this country was built, its democratic processes, liberties, a government for and by the people, etc. I believe that this is the greatest country in the world in that it offers, not a perfect platform but one that evolves and embraces change.
There exist a myriad of issues facing the global community today, one of the biggest problem confronting our diverse world today is the illusion that our differences matter more than our common humanity.
I will end with one of my favorite quotes:
"If you don't like change, you're going to like irrelevance even less."
--General Eric Shinseki, former U.S. Army Chief of Staff
