Karin's Story
Life
After graduation I continued in nursing school until December of '82. It just wasn't working out for me. I took some time off to decide which direction my life was headed. In October of '83, I met the man that I would marry in May '84. We had our first child in February '85 and a second daughter in December '86. We lived mostly in the Virginia Beach area except for a brief, what-were-we-thinking, stay in Rocky Mount, N.C. My husband was a plumber when we met but after 5 years of summertime heat and winter chill, decided new construction was not for him and went back to an earlier career as an over-the-road truck driver. Engineer. Whoppee! No one clued me in as to how hard it would be to land a job in I.T. in a military town and with no experience. Most of the jobs are scooped up by people retiring from the military who already have security clearance and working experience. Eventually I was hired by Sentara Virginia Beach General where I spent 2 1/2 years as a birth registrar/notary/and in patient registration. By the end of December 2004, both my girls were in college or on their own so we took advantage of the great housing market and sold our home at a good profit and moved to sunny Florida. The hardest part of leaving "Vah Beach" was leaving my 6 month old grandson. Although with today's technology; cell phones, email, video phones, it's not as bad as it would have been even 10 years ago. Florida is sunny and beautiful and we even got to host this year's Superbowl. If you ever get down this way, please look me up! Of course, it's under "Plitt" not "Schuhl"!
