Karl's Story

Thank you, Lois and Terry, for organizing the 60th. I live in Oregon (since 1973) and won't be at the picnic, but greetings to everyone. I'm retired from the faculty of Oregon State U. (the other OSU), and focused on keeping my retirement years simple. Enjoy the reunion - and here's a bit about me: Along with a few PVHS classmates, I went to Ohio University. After graduation, I spent two years in Ethiopia as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I lived in a very remote village in a mud house, got my daily water from the river in a tin bucket and helped build a bridge - all the usual Peace Corps stuff. Somewhere in my 2nd year, the draft board sent me "greetings", and I ignored the letter. After finishing my PC assignment, I drifted eastward through many countries, landing eventually in Afghanistan, which I fell immensely in love with. But when Nixon was elected, I felt a deep urge to return to the US and do my bit for the Peace Movement. So I hoisted my backpack and drifted on, reporting for duty at a US military base in Thailand. That got me assigned to Ft. Ord, California for basic, and a few months later I got orders to Vietnam, which I refused. That did cause a fuss, and there was even more consternation among the good folk at Ft. Ord when I went over their heads an...Expand for more
d sued President Nixon, the Dept. of Defense, and the whole Washington DC war machine - and won. It took a long time, and since I did it without a lawyer, I set a few legal precedents and firsts, but that was a long time ago, and life moves on. After discharge, I was awarded a Fulbright Lectureship and taught at a university in Sumatra for two years, then came back to the US and joined the faculty at Oregon State University, where I've been ever since. Under its aegis, I worked intermittently on international assignments in Peru, Central America, and Sri Lanka, and as Chief of Party of a large USAID foreign aid project in Yemen, helping to build a university there from the ground up. I was fortunate in being able to retire in 1998, and so, too, was my wife a few years later. I spend my mornings trading stocks, my afternoons exercising, and on weekends, Debby and I frequently head north to Portland to help our daughter and her husband renovate their house, a never-ending project. In winter, we try to make a trip or two to Hawaii, and in spring, we travel to Vienna for a month of opera, German pastries, and symphonies. And so, having arrived at the age of 78, I count myself as among the most fortunate of people. My warm regards to you and to all our classmates.
