Karl's Story
Retired from 30-year management career at Sea-Tac International Airport in 2003. Happy not to accept employment since then!
Long-term relationship with a psychotherapist (no, not mine!) resulted in marriage in late 2005. Her daughter produced two grandkids, now 8 and almost 6.
School
Resisting direction from teachers and having no career plan when in high school, I just barely graduated (1.78 GPA after 5 semesters, and my last semester didn't raise it much!). My dad had a small airplane and got me interested in flying during my senior year. I did well at flying, getting my private pilot license before beginning college.
College
Despite my poor high school grades, I was able to get into the aerospace technology program at Metropolitan State College. In my first quarter/semester at Metro, I doubled my GPA to 3.625 with, obviously, a lot of studying to overcome bad (or few!) high school study habits. While there, I also earned my commercial pilot license and instrument rating.
After two-plus years of good grades, I decided to transfer to the well-respected aeronautical technology program in the Engineering College at Arizona State University with the plan of becoming an airline pilot. After about another ye...Expand for more
ar, and earning my multi-engine and glider ratings and getting checked out for my instructor rating, I decided to switch from the professional pilot option to the airport/airline option in the aero-tech program. I graduated in 1972 "With Distinction" (above a 3.25 GPA) and proceeded to finish the prerequisites for entering the MBA program at ASU. I then decided to get out into the work world and, if an MBA was required/desired in the future, I would return to get it. The thought of returning to school was never appealing.
Workplace
After working for a small cargo airline in California for about a year, I moved up to Washington, where my parents had moved while I was in college (yes, they left their forwarding address!), and applied to work at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Starting in October of 1973 as a junior person in the real estate group, I worked my way up to become the Director of Business and Property Management before retiring in October of 2003. Love being paid not to work!
I have since done a little consulting work, bought and sold some properties, currently short-platting and developing another property, remodeled our new house and often working to keep our large yard under control.
