Karl's Story

College Started taking college classes while in high school. Went to ENMU-Portales. Stayed out one semester to learn to fly. When I resumed classes, I doubled up, (up to 23 hours a semester) so I could graduate on time. In my spare time I worked at a car rental agency in Roswell, and flight instructed at the local Portales airport. (One of my students has been the pilot of the space shuttle FOUR times!!!) Got my masters degree from Troy State University in Alabama (1984), while on active duty in the Air Force. Workplace After separating from the Air Force in 1988, I flew for Petroleum helicopters out in the Gulf of Mexico. Did that for 9 months and then was accepted to fly for US Customs in Albuquerque, NM. Flew the Citation, Blackhawk helicopter, Beechcraft King Air, and a few other aircraft. After three years I left Customs and flew for Pan Am Express, (DHC-7, BAE3200, and ATR-42). Flew for them for 10 months, got furloughed, recalled back six months later and hired by Trans World Express. Did that for 4 years until I was furloughed again. Sent out resumes and was hired 2 weeks later by Express One International in Dallas, TX. Worked in Belgium for EOI for three months and was furloughed again. On the street for nearly two months and was recalled by Express One. Flew as a flight engineer for one and a half years, upgraded to copilot, and then captain on the B-727 while in Brussels. Met my wife, who at that time was throwing boxes in freight containers in a massive sort area for DHL ...Expand for more
at 0200 in the morning!! Proposed to her in the cockpit of a B-727 in Brussels a year later, and then she flew with us to Basel, Switzerland, that night. We both applied for and were accepted for jobs at Continental Airlines. Sigrid had to wait till we were married since she was Belgian. Update on 23 April 07: Well, the marriage didn't work out so Sigrid and I divorced after 8.5 years of being together. We're still great friends and she's a terrific person. I've upgraded to captain on the B737 at Continental, so if you're flying the skies of CAL, look up front and say hello if I'm in the cockpit. I have a new website for my photography which has recently become a great hobby. You can find it by googling "karl novak photos". If you get to Hollywood, FLorida, look me up and we'll go out for a burger! Update: 060908 Have a new blog out and you can find it by googling "karl novak blog". It's called "Picture This". Come pay me a visit and let me know what you think! Military Joined the USAF in Oct., 1980, and was commissioned a 2 Lt. on 4 Feb 81. Assigned to fly CH-53 Super Sea Stallion helicopters in Sembach, Germany. Left Germany in 1985 and moved to Fort Walton Beach (Hurlburt Field). Worked in the 1st Special Operation Wing Safety Office and flew the MH-53J model helicopter. Separated from active duty Air Force in Jan, 1988, and joined the military reserves in March of 1990. I worked as a Civil Air Patrol Liaison Officer, and participated in Brunswick, GA. Retired in February of 2003.
