Karla's Story
Who are you really, Karla?
For right now, I live in Manhattan. I moved here in December 2001, for my job as a medical journalist for Reuters Health. I love my work (it satisfies the nerd in me -- remember what a nerd I was?). Must admit I'm a bit of a workaholic.
I have 3 kids, all in their 20s; two still live in Columbus, Ohio where they grew up, and my daughter lives in Dallas, TX. I'm really happy because we see each other at least twice a year, and we talk and email a lot. Their father and I divorced about 12 years ago.
New York, at least for me, is a difficult place to live. People in Ohio are so much friendlier! And of course the cost of living is out of this world. But it's fantastic for people watching (and photography).
The teachers I remember most vividly are Mr. Armenti and Mrs. Bartels.
I'm generally not too shy anymore; you can't be when you're a reporter!
People I admire: Volunteers for Doctors Without Borders.

I'm obsessed with my kids, art, dance, creativity, life sciences, writing, mystery, people watching, photography and nature. I'm also a peace-nik.
What my kids taught me: No matter how you raised your children, they'll still surprise (and shock) you. I also found that, for me, having children has been the best that life has to offer.
If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to charities that help people in need, then spend the rest on my kids' education, my own education and a house close to family with a big yard, lots of pets, and great neighbors.
To be truly happy, I'd live near my children and be totally in touch with my creative muse.
My first job was at Health Haven Nursing Home, where I got paid minimum wage to care for the elderly/disabled. What I remember most about it is how much I loved it and how important it felt to do a good job. What I learned there has stayed with me for the last 40 years.
