Karla's Story

After reading Larry Moon¿s story I was overwhelmingly proud, happy, and excited for him. Then I started to think back and wonder just what did I do with all of those years. I started to get very nervous thinking that maybe I had wasted them. So I pulled out the trusty laptop and began making a list. I will begin my story in the year of 1980. Yes, I know that we graduated in 1978, but I am sure that most of you will agree that there are some years that we would like to forget. In 1980 I was going to college at NMSU and working as a police dispatcher there as well. I finally decided to work full-time and just take a class or two a semester because I just did not know what I wanted to do when I grew up. That is when I met the love of my life. Allen had just graduated from NMSU and was now an officer there. I fell head over heals for him. We were married at the University Church of Christ in Las Cruces in April of 1981. Allen started working shortly there after at the City Police Department (I think that he got tired of me telling where to go, as his dispatcher, I did that a lot). Allen decided that I needed to learn how to shoot a gun. So I learned (very well) and he never gives me any more trouble about taking out the trash. In 1983 our first son was born. Matthew was and is such a joy in our lives. I then quit the police department and went to work as a temp employee and worked as a secretary and receptionist in several law offices. I then was hired to work for Temp Force, where I interviewed, tested and placed people in jobs. When Matthew was 18 month old, Allen joined the U.S. Border Patrol. In November of 1985 we moved to California. This was when I became a stay at home mom. This was the best job I had ever had and I enjoyed every single day of it. In 1987 our daughter Kimberly was born. Kimberly is one of our pride and joys and we can never love her enough. She is the apple of her daddy¿s eye. We left California in 1988 and moved to Pecos, Texas. Matthew and I decided to join the United States Tae Kwon Do and International Tae Kwon Do Federation. We worked hard and loved it. I know that this not what typical stay at home moms usually do with their children but, I have never been described as typical in my entire life, why start now. ...Expand for more
At this point in my life I was throwing footballs, baseballs, playing Barbies, and having tea parties on a daily basis and loving it all. In 1991 our last child, Corey was born. He is such a love. He is smart, funny, and great fun to be around most of the time. He has a big heart but hates to let it show too much. In February of 1992, I earned my 1st black belt in Tae Kwon Do under the instruction of Fabian Nunez in Odessa, Texas. I attended two Black Belt National Competitions, one in Colorado and one in Boston as part of the Texas Team. In 1994 I earned my 2nd degree black belt. Shortly after that we moved to Brunswick, Georgia, where Allen was a firearms instructor for the Border Patrol at GLYNCO. When the kids were all old enough to go to school, I went to work as the Church of Christ secretary part time. That way I was always home in time to go and pick the kids up from school. In 1999, we moved to Malone, New York. This is where we are today. A friend and I have started our on business called Memory Designers. We scrapbook peoples memories for them. Business has been very good in fact we have had to turn down business because it was taking away to much of our family time. I also work full-time now at the local public library. I love the job and because I love to read, it is like working in a candy store. I know that most of you are laughing because of the fact that I am really a loud person. Even Allen had a great chuckle at my expense, but honestly my co-workers are just as loud as I am. It is weird. Matthew graduated from Damien College and joined the U.S. Border Patrol. Kimberly is currently attending College at St. John Fisher for her Bachelors in Nursing, and Corey is attending college at Suny Canton working toward a Bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems. Allen and I after almost 26 years have an empty nest and found out that it is not so bad. We have been hiking, sightseeing, going to gun matches and enjoying just being together. So I guess those years were not wasted after all. Allen and I have been married for almost 29 years and we have been extremely busy raising three wonderful children. After all of this time, I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up...and that is just what I was, a wife and mother.
