Karrie's Story
Life
My life. Well from the announcement you already know I got married, got pregnant and became a widow. Right now I'm trying to get my life back in order after the sudden loss of Tony. He was 14yrs older than me but he never acted like it. He was the first to help others and always put himself last. Tony had worked at the Topeka fire department for 21years. I was always joking with him that when he was a freshman in HS I had just been born:) He was so funny, smart, loving and extremely overprotective of me. As much as I hate living without him I'm so thankful for the short time we had together.
But I'm not alone in the house, I have 2 cats and 1 very spoiled black lab.
My parents retired and moved to Tama where my dad grew up and now they travel the world, presently in Japan. They are extremely excited about their first grandbaby on the way. She is due December 22.
My sister still lives in Boston with a nice job and just recently bought a condo for the price you could by a mansion here in Topeka.
School
ah high school... the longer I'm away from HS the more I realize just how much I liked it. I loved being apart of the drumline and miss it even now.
College
College, well I kind of went in a different direction from art. I eventually went to KU and had a blast!! I loved college, maybe a little bit too much. But come the summer I'll be returning to KU full-time to finish my BGS then on to Baker University to get my nursing degree. Who knew that when I left HS that I'd be anywhere near the medic...Expand for more
al field, but I found my calling, being an EMT and being a nurse in the NICU will be a very close second.
Workplace
I've work for American Medical Response for the last 5 years as and Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate Field Training Officer. The intermediate means that I can start IV's and put tubes down peoples throats to manually breath for them. I love my job. It just doesn't work so well with kids. We work either 24hr shifts like the fire department or 12hr shifts. Who can find a babysitter for 24 or 12 hrs and can afford it!! Tony not only work full time for the fire department but he also work part time at AMR where I work. So its been hard to go back to work with all of the memories I have of Tony there. The guys on the fire department have been so kind to me, they feel its their job to take care of me now that Tony isn't here. Tony was the first firefighter to die on duty in the last 30 years so none of the guys working now have ever experienced losing one of their own before. We're trying to help each other get through this tough time.
Military
Military...My stepson Derek is presently in training for the Marines. We expect him to be overseas by possibly Feb:( I know that his dad will be right by his side to make sure he comes home safe. Derek's fiancee Jessica just finished Marine boot camp and will be going to infantry trainin sometime. I'm sure when she gets out they will be shipping her over to the sandbox too:( I know Tony will be taking care of them both while they are over there.
