Katherine's Story

Life After graduation I obtained a BA in Education from UNI. I taught full time for a year in Osceola, Iowa, then worked in the vocational/technical field as an instructor and later Director of Student Services. Later, I ended up at The Principal Financial Group in Des Moines as a technical writer. After a few years of writing insurance and PC software manuals, I missed the classroom and transferred to the Technical Learning department where I taught Microsoft Office applications, other supported software, and Microsoft OS. In 1999 I began working as a self-employed contracter/consultant doing some techncial writing and software training. Currently I'm the Webmaster at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. I love my job. pplications. I have 3 children and 2 step-children. Ryan is 31 (ouch!) and works on the east coast in the internet security field. Bryan (step-son) is 26 and is enlisted in the Army and is in Special Forces at Fort Bragg, NC. He returned in February 04 from a deployment in Iraq and had a second deployment in 07 in Afghanistan. Jessica (step-daughter) is 24, married, and has a step-son aged 3. Elizabeth is 20. She works for EDS in Des Moines as a Blackberry support rep. Christine is a senior this year (18) and has completed her advanced CNA class and plans to pursue a career in nursing. Zach (11) and Gizmo (3) are our Shih Tzus --I've always been a "cat person" but these guys have converted me! My husband, Mike, is a Citrix network engineer in Des Moines. We have been married for 22 years.
