Kathi's Story

Life The lessons in life that you learn in retrospect are powerful ones. Needless to say, I didn't graduate with my class. In fact, I don't know if I even attended classes at McClatchy in my senior year, since I had a thing about not attending school at all back then...and then again, I do remember a little of my Junior year at CKM, and I believe that the last yearbook picture I had taken was in my junior year and is in the 1974 yearbook. My high school life started in Needles, CA, where I was a proud member of the Mustang team. I was the new kid on the block and everyone was friendly and I felt accepted. That was so important to me at that time. I transferred to CKM in Sacramento mid-semester of my sophomore year. It was somewhat of a culture shock for me, coming from such a small community to the "vast campus" of CKM. I remember hanging out with mostly friends of my brother, Keith, but some of his friends became my friends as well. Long lost names like Joyce McInturf, Kathy Barbieri, Dawn Irish, Ann Siebal, Bobbi Link, Bob and Bill Gari, Craig Vilardi, and Ken Kinder come to mind. I remember starting out in Rally my junior year (every time I hear Chicago'’s 25 or 6 to 4 I think of that Rally routine), but then dropping out because I was embarrassed that my Mother'’s dog found my letter "M" and chewed it up. I think that my truancy started soon after that. Oh well…, the "School of Hard Knocks"” as I like to call it, did a fine job, and I think that I did okay for myself. What have I been up to the last 40 years? I started working for the State (EDD) in 1974 in an entry-level position that was called Key Data Operator Trainee at the time. I got married in 1976, promoted to supervisor in 1977 and was in charge of training other employees at that time. I took a few college classes and transferred over to accounting in ...Expand for more
1978, did that for a year, took a couple more classes and transferred to Caltrans as a “Junior Engineering Technician in 1979. I took a leave of absence in 1981, to go gold mining in the bush country of Chicken, Alaska, with my grandparents and husband. Now THAT, was an experience in living life. It was one of the best learning lessons in my life and I will forever treasure the time I spent there. We stayed up there for 3 years, coming home to Sacramento around Thanksgiving and going back up in February, so that we could get our supplies in before the ice on the river broke around the end of March. After permanently returning to Sac, I returned to Caltrans, which was having a hiring freeze at the time, so I ended up transferring from my JET position, into a drafting position as a Drafting Aid II with the Office of Electrical, Mechanical, Water & Wastewater Engineering, which deals with the architectural and structural side of Caltrans buildings, roadside rest areas, bridges, maintenance stations, etc., etc. I worked my way up through the ranks, finally topping out as an Electrical Engineering Technician III”, a position from which I retired from in July of 2014, after 36.5 years of state service. In 1986, my first husband and I divorced, and I met my current husband, Michael. We married 6 years later in 1992 and I became step-mom to our daughter, Ryan. Through Ryan, I am now the grandmother of 6 (WOW!!). For fun I enjoy motorcycle riding with my hubby on the Harley, with my little Pomeranian Miles, camping with my family, genealogy, and traveling to places with warm water and white sand (Cozumel, Hawaii, US and British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Belize, so far) so I can indulge myself in my passion, scuba diving. My husband and I bought a house in Vacaville, CA in 1994, and we live there still today with "furson" Miles.
