Kathi's Story
Life
Two months after graduating from Narbonne, I joined the U.S. Army Reserve. I was a Reservist at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro and Los Alamitos, CA for almost 6 years. In that time I met and married Donald Andrews, originally from North Carolina. I was a finance specialist. Brianne Kathryn was born in 1979 and Donald Kevin was born in 1981. In 1984, I transferred to the Active Army. I retrained as a truck driver and was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas for 3 years. Krystal Doreen was born in 1986. When I reenlisted in 1987, I chose to be assigned at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. I attained the rank of sergeant there and was a finance computer systems operator. I became a Girl Scout leader of a Brownie troop there. In 1989, I transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve and had our fourth child, Kimberlee Lisa. Donald was working as a correctional officer in Indiana, so we moved the whole family there. We bought our first home in Rosedale, Indiana. I became a Girl Scout troop leader to two troops: Brownies and Juniors. I was also a Cub Scout den leader and Boy Scout treasurer. I returned to the Army Reserves in 1990 and served at Fort Ben Harrison, Indiana. In 1994, I was accepted into the Active Guard Reserve Program and stayed in Indiana for 2 more years. I retrained as an executive administrative assistant and was promoted to staff sergeant in 1995 and stationed in Oakdale, Pennsylvania in 1996. We moved to California, Pennsylvania and purchased our second home. I was once again a Girl Scout troop leader. Donald became a Pennsylvania correctional officer. We spent 4 years in Pennsylvania. Brianne and Donald Kevin graduated high school there. We fostered Michael McEwan as our son during our stay in Pennsylvania. I was promoted to sergeant first class in 1999 and transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington in 2000. Our son Donald Kevin joined the Marines in 2000, served during the Iraqi War, and was discharged in 2003. Krystal graduated from high school in Washington and currently is a sophomore at the University of Washington. I was promoted to master sergeant in 2004 and transferred back to Pennsylvania. Kimberlee is a sophomore in high school. Donald and I have been married for 26 years. Our daughter Brianne married Kenneth Ross April 12, 2003. Our first grandchild, Heaven Rayne, was born March 18, 2004, and our second grandchild, Eden Rose, was born December 30, 2005. Our entire family has accepted Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior. We are all very active in our respective churches. Our greatest desire is that all of our family and friends accept the free gift of Salvation through...Expand for more
Jesus Christ before they leave this earth.
College
I started attending Los Angeles Harbor College in 1979. I attended off and on at LAHC until 1983. In 1985 I started attending El Paso Community College. I took classes with EPCC until 1987. In 1995 I attended Vincennes Comunity College in Indianapolis, Indiana. I am now attending Thomas Edison State College through the eArmyU Program which allows me to perform all of my studies online. I am majoring in history. By the end of this semester I should earn my Associate's degree in liberal arts from El Paso Community College. My goal is to have my Bachelor's degree in history by the end of 2004.
Workplace
I never planned to make the Army a career, but here I am 28 years later. Other jobs I have held over the years are: 1) Kmart automotive manager; 2) records clerk at Los Angeles Harbor College; 3) Dunkin Donuts waitress; 4) medical records clerk; 5) McDonald's crewperson; 6) accounts receivable clerk at a truck company and an automotive parts warehouse; 7) plastics factory worker; 8) accounts payable clerk at a prison. I currently run my own Creative Memories scrapbooking business and ACN utilities business.
Military
I joined the Army Reserve the summer of 1977. I was looking for a job and found an ad in the paper that said I could work one weekend a month and 2 weeks every year. I showed the ad to my dad, and he took me right down to the recruiting station. I went to basic training in South Carolina that August. I went to the finance school at Fort Ben Harrison, Indiana that October, and came home to California in December. I joined the 408th Finance Section out of Fort MacArthur, California. In 1984 I went Active Duty and trained as a truck driver at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Upon completion of that training, I was assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas. We spent 3 years there before I was transferred to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In 1989 I went into the Inactive Reserve just before I had my fourth child. In 1990 I joined another Reserve unit, the 123d Army Reserve Command at Fort Ben Harrison, Indiana. In 1994 I switched from the Reserve to the Active/Guard Reserve Program. I remained at Fort Harrison until 1996 when I was transferred to Oakdale, Pennsylvania. I was stationed there for 4 years. In 2000, I was transferred to the 4th Bde, 91st Div (TS) at Fort Lewis, Washington. In 2004, I was transferred to the 453d Fin Bn in New Cumberland, PA. As my unit is currently deactivating, I fully expect to be transferred by summer of 2006. That should be my final transfer before I retire from the Army.
