Kathie's Story

Professionally, I have taught at Mt. SAC Community College since 1974, during which time I have been union president, served on many committees, and am now beginning my tenth year as chair of the music department. I have written two textbooks, both published by McGraw-Hill. Rock Music Styles: A History is out in its fifth edition and Experience Music is out in its second edition. I have enjoyed three full-year sabbaticals and hope to retire in two or three years to continue to write and learn to oil paint. Personally, I married one of my college professors from CSUF in 1972. ans, especially in early music and toured in France and Italy with a group one summer. We traveled a lot and were very happy until his death from kidney cancer in 1997. I was pretty much a zombie for the next three years, but finally got ahold of myself. I bought a cabin in Idyllwild, took a photo safari to Africa, and then joined Great Expectations through which I met my current husband, Jeff Calkins. He is a lawyer and we enjoy weekends in Idyllwild together and have taken trips to England and Italy so far. Jeff and I love cooking, wine tasting, plays, concerts, operas, and our little poodle, Kitoto.
