Kathie's Story

Life I've been in the Orange County area for 30 years now, and have worked in the mortgage banking industry for 25 years. I was also a professional bellydancer for 23 years. I've never lost my love of music and dance. I have one daughter and one grandaughter and am a proud grandma. I live near the beach and spend lots of time there. I Love to Travel anywhere. I would go back to Italy in a heartbeat, but Egypt, Greece and more of Europe are on my bucket list. Story Wizard Questions: I hope that people remember me as fun loving. I always wanted to be a Ballerina when I grew up & took years of lessons as a kid. Unfortunately my dream never came true. In retrospect it was a blessing because ballerinas usually have short careers and unhappy lives. Through the years though I managed to soothe the dance beast in me by bellydancing and was quite successful at it as a sideline. I walk by the beach or listen to music and dance to relax. I don't remember being wild. All I remember is wanting to get kissed. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have respect. My mom was my hero. She raised me on her own and sacrificed alot for me. I love Orange County because I'm near the ocean. I like the feel of wide open spaces and fresh air. Family & friends, writing, poetry, nature, history, music, art, travel and dance are my obsessions. I never thought I'd be in the Financial Services industry for as long as I have been. I always thought I'd be doing something more "artsy." My dream home would be anything with a deck and an ocean view. As a mom I've learned not to seek perfection in your children..no one is perfect. Raising a child has its ups and downs - it just goes with the territory. Also, to encourage your child to "pursue their dreams." A parent shouldn't put their own personal dreams or limitations on their children. As a grandmother I've learned to be more patient and compassionate and to see things through my grandaughter's eyes. I would love to see Mrs. Wilson, my 5th grade teacher to thank her for being so patient and strict with me in learning math. She had me sit through quite a few recesses to make sure I understood those math lessons. If I won $100 million I'd set aside money for various charitable organizations, invest alot, throw a big party for friends, spend alot on my daughter & grandaughter and travel. I lived in a dorm in boarding school through most of my elementary school years, but missed out on all those toga parties in college that I heard about...thank God! I am truly happy. I feel blessed. Except I wouldn't mind winning that $100 million. I just turned 57. At 12, I thought 57 year olds were ancient and old fashioned. It's not as bad as I thought except for those occasional aches and pains. I like the wisdom that comes with age. Now I know what THEY meant when THEY said, "if I knew then what I know now..." and "oh, my aching back." Ricky Nelson was my first crush. Sadly, he died in a plane crash. I also had a crush on Paul McCartney. I finally saw him in concert last year, bu...Expand for more
t the magic was not the same as when I was 12! Me and my grandaughter like that we both had crushes on McCartney's....Paul for me and Jesse for her! No I don't dress like I used to 10-20 years ago. I've put on quite a bit of weight over the years which I'm trying to lose. I do miss wearing all those cute outfits though and hope to wear them again some day, but for now Lane Bryant is my friend. Weirdest jobs I've ever had: executive assistant to personal injury attorneys, cocktail waitress (I lasted 15 minutes), apprentice in a stained/etched glass company. Personal Injury Law draws some real winners - mostly people who are completely unaccountable for their own actions - I found them intolerable. As a cocktail waitress dealing with inebriated jerks who think they are being charming was a real problem. I'm patient up to a point and then can't help but speak my mind and it can get ugly - ergo my 15 minutes of fame as a cocktail waitress. I enjoyed my year as an etching assistant on Catalina Island for a stained glass business. I practically starved, as artists do from time to time, but on the positive side I was in great shape. If I could do one thing differently, I would have gone to college when I had the chance and not married so young. In 10 years I hope to be semi-retired but still working preferably in a field that reflects my passion for art, dance or writing. My oldest friend is Missy. I met her in 1st grade. She invited me to her house one day for lunch and she made me Campbell's tomato soup all on her own. I was so impressed by her independence. My high school friends would likely find it amusing that I was a professional bellydancer for many years. My first job at age 13 was at a soda fountain in a drug store (remember those?). I was the bus girl/dish washer. My mom got me the job for the summer and I hated it. This was what I term "my mom's accelerated learning program," which worked. I learned that if I didn't study and get a good education that this would be my future. When I was 4 or 5 my Aunt Juliet babysat me. Some kids down the street started a club but wouldn't let me join because I didn't have a grown up outfit to wear. My Aunt Juliet lent me her polka dot dress & high heels and sent me down the street. I was accepted into the club but after 15 minutes I was so bored with them that I left. I learned that if others judge you or accept you based on superficialities those people are usually not much fun to play with. I feel blessed at having had the opportunity to go to St. Mary's and develop the many wonderful friendships that I cherish and still have today. When you read about all the strife and violence in high schools all across the nation these days I realize how lucky and blessed we all were to attend such a great school and to be surrounded by women that were smart, talented, kind, compassionate, and most importantly, respectful of each other. If we could just bottle up that formula and send it to all the high schools in America, the world would be a better place.
