Kathleen's Story

Life While at Union, I met Tim Carlson, who had gone to Campion Academy. We married in June, 1967, and moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, where Tim received his master's degree. You could have called us the Rapid Citybillies as we moved in two cars to Berrien Springs, Michigan, where Tim taught science at the academy, and I finished my degree in Elementary Education. The University of Minnesota and Maple Plain were our next destinations. Tim spent one winter walking across the bridge to class, and I spent my first year of teaching in the two-room church school with 10 students. We vagabonds were off again the next summer to Denver, Colorado, where Tim found a position in a lab at the University of Colorado Medical Center, and I worked on my masters in Education at CU (also became a master at naming the flower children on the "hill"). We loved Colorado, and I worked at Mile High Academy for three years in their libraries. It was in 1976 that we traveled to Kansas to pick up our newborn son, Theodore Christian. His adoption finalized in five months, but it seemed like five years! When grant money began to dry up at the University, Tim decided to resume his work on his PhD at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He succeeded, while I ran a home day care and then found a library position at three of the Pueblo Day Schools, Zia, Jemez and San Felipe. I loved my jobs there, but was interrupted by something even more exciting...a year's residence in Malmö, Sweden, where Tim worked at the University of Lund Medical Center in Malmö...Expand for more
. I began the long journey to learning Swedish, and our son attended Swedish third grade, also learning children's Swedish. When we returned to Albuquerque, I took a position in the public school system, teaching in the south valley barrio of Armijo. Then came our move to Seattle! What culture and weather shock! I took a position in the Issaquah Public Schools, teaching in the library, and designing an entirely new physical library facility. Tim worked at the University of Washington, and variouss other places until he found a position at Pacific Biometrics, supervising their laboratory. He's still there, but I moved closer to home, joining the Bellevue Public School system in 1999. I work at a "center school" for physically and mentally handicapped elementary kids. It's a real challenge, but it's only 11 minutes from home! Tad has grown to 6' 4", hovers around 270 pounds, and works as a contractor at Microsoft. We wish Bill would decide to hire him full time, since contractors are compelled to take three months off for each year they work. Tim and I are busy with Scandinavian Folkdance, and have just returned from another dance workshop-trip to Sweden. Each year we go it gets harder to leave and come back to reality, but a Democrat in the White House could help that quite a bit!!! :) Visit my webpage if you want to see more about our lives, now that Tim's almost 60, and I can see it "over the hill" (remember when that meant 30?). Come by the webpage anytime, I do update now and then! Hope to see you all in Hutch this October!
