Kathleen's Story

I attended Fremont Elementary in Alhambra from 4th to 8th grade ('55 to '60). Best friends were Claire Colson and Margaret Moore. I lived on Winthrop Drive next door to Peter Brown, and near Janie Comer, Judy Swain and Claire. Played flute in the band. Favorite teachers were Mr. Yost and Mr. Martinez. Favorite activities: getting books from the little library across the street from Fremont, swimming at the pool at Granada Park. I left Alhambra HS middle of freshman year and moved to Los Angeles. Graduated from George Washington HS in Winter ¿65. Lived on 105th near Renee Jobst and later on 118th. Best friend was Lauraine Bencangey. Took French and Spanish every year. Favorite teachers were Mrs. Grillo and Mr. Taddeo. Favorite activities: getting a dollars worth of gas and going up to cruise Hollywood and Sunset Blvds in my very uncool turquoise and white DeSoto, and double features at the Vermont drive-in. I was the "shy loner" in school (always had my nose in a book) but no one now can believe I was ever "shy or a loner". I won a Scholarship to UCLA but dropped out 2nd year to have 1st child. I had married GWHS classmate/sweetheart Conrad McKay right after graduation in '65. We had 4 children but our twin boys died in '70. Conrad and I divorced after 13 years. Conrad passed away from lung cancer in 2006. I have been married to 2nd husband, Alan, for 27 years. We have 4 daughters and a son, who range in age from 40 to 20. Only have two grandchildren so far. Alan and I helped raise my stepson (Conrad¿s son from a later relationship) and cons...Expand for more
ider him our 6th kid. We also had 2 foster teenagers for several years. After 40 years of a home filled with kids, the empty nest feels strange indeed. My husband and I are retired Aero Space Engineers. We both worked for TRW, where we met. Although we have lived in Redondo Beach for decades, we spent a lot of time in Florida working at Cape Canaveral. We are ardent cat lovers but only have 3 at the moment. I retired early and spend my time on my great passions - traveling, volunteer work, entertaining, and doing genealogy research for others. Besides my family, my biggest blessing is that I am a 3-time cancer survivor. My most difficult, but most rewarding accomplishment ¿ My father left when I was 2 years old and I never knew him or any of his family. When I was 38, I ¿found¿ him and learned that I had 2 younger half-sisters, whom he had also abandoned. He died just months after I met him. After his death, I searched for and ¿found¿ my 2 half-sisters (in TX and TN), who also did not know each other. Better late than never, we have become good friends. I would enjoy hearing from any old classmates from any of the schools I attended. Also will share more info about Conrad McKay with anyone from GWHS who is interested. I would love to hear about, or get in touch with, my old best friends Claire Colson from Alhambra, and Lauraine Bencangey from GWHS (who are not registered on Classmates at this time) Can anyone HELP? Added Dec. 2018: After 38 years of marriage, my husband Alan passed away in September.. Kathleen (Kathie) Hill McKay) Ishikawa
