Kathleen's Story

Life The first High School I attended was Ben Lomond in Ogden. I then moved to Tucson Az, and went to Amphitheater H.S. I then moved to Wyoming where I attended Sheridan H.S. After graduating from Sheridan HS I went to Reno NV for a while. Left there and ended up in Hawaii where I have been living for the past (my god is it possible) 33 years! I love to travel and go to Asia whenever possible. I also love to go on cruises. I am a Detective at the Honolulu Police Department and investigate violent crimes, so I am kept very busy. I would love to correspond with anyone from Utah, Az or Wyoming. I do not miss the winters!!! That's why I moved to Hawaii!! Aloha Kathy Workplace When I joined HPD in 1980 I was one of the first women to become a police officer in Hawaii. There were several of us in our class and we were the pioneers for the rest of the women who have since joined law enforcement. Honolulu is a big city with a good deal of crime. My life is constantly on the go, either investigating or testifying in court. I feel rewarded by the help I've provided to the victims of violent crimes and always try to do a little more than is needed to help those in distress. I recently was asked to join the Homicide Detail and now investigate murder cases. I find it very challenging and am always learning. That's the great thing about this job, I am never bored! My very good friend is an author. She has written several books about a female police officer in Hawaii. Her character is based on me and the times that she has spent with me at work. She is on book 3. Her name is Victoria Heckman, and the books are the Katrina Ogden (KO) series. To date she has "KO'd in Honolulu", "KO'd in the Volcano" and is coming out with "KO'd in the Rift" in August 2005. Great light-reading books to relax and enjoy. UPDATE **** In November 2007 I retired after 27 years at the Honolulu Police Department. I took job providing security for the Federal Courthouse in Honolulu and work with the US Marshals Office there. After spending 4 years at the Federal Courthouse, I needed a change. I am very happy, selling fine jewelry at a nationwide department store. I love jewelry and meeting new people. I should have done this long ago! TRAVEL: So far I've been able to get visit Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bali, China, and Laos. I love Asia, and always look forward to vacationing in an exotic locale! During the 1980's I traveled through Europe and enjoyed it quite a bit. With that said, I truly love Southeast Asia and return whenever possible.... Travel Update: I finally made it to Laos is Feb 2010. Wonderful trip with the exception of one small detail....on our cruise up the Mekong River from Thailand into Laos; our ship hit some submerged rocks and actually sunk! Thank God everyone got off safely and there were no serious injuries, other than some of the older passengers were bruised-up and in shock. It was probably one of the most intense moments of my life, and I've had some pretty intense stuff happen. We were rescued by a passing tour-boat and taken to our final destination: Luang Prabang. The people were wonderful and I love the city. It was the Royal Capital prior to the French taking over; and has recently opened to western tourism. A beautiful, small city with some of the nicest people I have ever met, and I intend to go back and stay longer. (Next time, however, I am flying in....no more boats!) BTW- they closed the Mekong to all large boat traffic after that incident, because the water level was too low. The smaller scorpion boats were still using it though, because it's the life-line of Laos. ' We spend some time afterwards in Bangkok, and I got to visit the Tiger Temple. It was amazing! Playing with the tiger cubs, and washing and walking the adult tigers is something I will cherish forever. Being born in the year of the Tiger is a special (to me, anyway), and I love the cats! The Temple is run by Buddist Monks and volunteers who are trying to keep the Tiger population from becoming extinct. They work on donations from people like me and if you want a great charity to support; these people are the best. I'll keep you posted on my next adventure..... October 2010+ What a blast! I Flew on a powered hang glider and had so much fun that I have decided to get one. The experience was awesome and I went once with my brother in law and once with my daughter. What an adventure, flying high above the North Shore of Oahu was incredible. I got to fly the glider on both flights and had so much fun that I hope to get my license and start flying myself. Wish me luck on this one.....lol BACK TO CAMBODIA. 2011. Soon we will be heading back to Angkor Wat and the area surrounding Siem Reap. I love this locale and am excited to be returning. We will also spend some time in North Vietnam in the Hanoi region. Don't know if I am ready to get back on any large boats, but I still intend to have a blast! I will keep you posted....:-) We just got back from Cambodia and Vietnam; and boy, what a great time! Explored more of the Angkor Wat are and the surrounding villages. We spent a week at a wonder villa surrounded by flowers, jungle and birds. It was awesome! WE also took 100 pounds of school supplies for some village children and bought rice for an orphanage while we were therel along wi...Expand for more
th buying them some fruit trees and a water filter. The people are so appreciative and it makes me really happy to help them. After that, we headed to Hanoi and the northern part of Vietnam. Spent several days in the Old Quarter part of Hanoi and then headed out to the mountain village of Mai Chau. Visited with the villagers and saw how they loomed their beautiful textiles. Needless to say, I brought back a lot of wonderful souveniers! I can't wait to return to Southeast Asia; I love it there. In August, 2012 I'll be heading back to Bali. Bali was my first adventure in that part of the world and I was hooked for life. The people are amazing and the food, countryside and the atmosphere of the island is truly magical. I can't wait to return and re-visit the place that I remember and love. Just got back from the amazing Bali vacation. Wish I was still there, and not back home! It has changed from when I visited 20 years ago, but still lovely and the people awesome. I would love to live there, or somewhere in SE Asia, and still have hopes of moving for a few years of real enjoyment before I get too old to really enjoy the hiking and adventures....:-) We were there during a big religious holiday and there were lots of celebrations and temple costumes to be seen and enjoyed. I do love it there. Next year : Elephant training in Thailand. And, of course, back to the Tiger Temple. I'll keep you posted! THAILAND 2013: just returned from an awesome Thai experience. My daughter and granddaughter joined us for this very special trip. We went to the Baan Chang Elephant Park outside of Chang Mai and rode elephants for 3 days. We had lessons in verbal commands and hand and foot signals, along with feeding and bathing the wonderful creatures. We fell in love with them and feel very fortunate to have been able to live with them for that time. We rode through the jungle and our guide cooked us lunch in bamboo sections steamed over an open fire. It was amazing and something we will never forget. We hope to return next year and spend more time there. After our stay in Chang Mai we went to Bangkok and visited the Tiger Temple for a day. I have been there before but by daughter and granddaughter had not. We had a wonderful time with the tigers, especially the cubs whom we feed with bottles and played with for quite a while. I'm looking forward to going there again soon.....I want to live there for a while. Aloha, till next time. 2014 has been a year of work and some travel. I decided to return to Cambodia to Siem Reap and continue my exploration of Angkor Wat and other temple ruins. We stayed at a great boutique hotel in town called The Mulberry. The staff was wonderful and I loved being close enough to walk to just about everywhere. This gave us a chance to explore more of Siem Reap and get to know the area well. We were there for a little more than 2 weeks and had a wonderful time. I hate to leave and always wish I could stay for several months. Next year I'm looking forward to the other part of the world with my 2 daughters. Now that should be a real adventure!! 2015. This year my daughters and I are heading to the other side of the planet! Malta will be our destination; and a first for me. I've been to Europe and spent time in Italy and several other countries, but not in the middle of the ocean! Should be lots of fun and an experience of a lifetime! We have never been able to get everyone's schedule together to take a family vacation; so this is very, very special. I've been on a diet and lost quite a bit of weight, so I am looking forward to wearing cute sun-dresses and bathing suits...... Just got back from Malta; and had an amazing time with my two girls! The plane ride took an entire day and a half, with the stop overs and plane changes; but it was worth it. Such history and wonderful scenery. It's like taking a step back in history and was a memorable vacation that I will never forget. Plus having the opportunity to hang-out with my kids and have quality bonding time was unforgettable. My youngest, Jasmin; drove and was so talented; able to drive on the left-hand side of the tiny little streets and whiz around the "Roundabouts" like a pro! We were very luck to have her as our designated driver. All and all, I would go back in a heartbeat! Hopefully we will be able to have another adventure in a year or two. I'm thinking of a European cruise.... Looks as though 2016 will be back to Shanghai and then on to Seoul. I love Shanghai, but haven't been in Seoul except for the airport as I travel through to Thailand or elsewhere. This should be another fun adventure! I'll keep you posted.... Well, 2016 found us back in Thailand and Cambodia. My 2 favorite places in the world! We spent a couple of weeks exploring and visiting friends. Of course, the trip was too short, and I am planning next year's adventure. This time, I will be with my 2 daughters and my granddaughter. We are headed to Norway! I'll keep you posted... Lots has occurred since my last post. I now live in Chiang Mai, Thailand. My retirement dreams have been fulfilled! I live near a stream, in the mountains, and have Elephants as nearby neighbors. I love it here, and have no plans to return to the USA. living in nature, with a lifestyle l could never have in the US, has spoiled me! I am very, very happy💙😊
