Kathleen's Story

I started school at Mulberry Elementary. My family went to St Andrew Lutheran Church. My best friends were Mary Morton, Karen Nucci and Kathy Dolan. I continued on to Hillview Jr High School and became interested in Art. Once I started at Cal High I continued with Art classes and planned to teach art. My design for the year book won for 1967. I attended Cypress Collège for several years and then on to Cal State University, Fullerton completing a degree in Art Education with a minor in English. After a 5th year of student teaching and School of Education, I received a teaching credential to teach Art in grades 1 - 12. (I never used it, however...) I married Fredrick Brown in July 1968. He was in the Air Force and later became a history teacher and swim coach. While I was in College, I was working for Wickes Furniture as the Display manager and loving it! Fred and I divorced in 1976. no children At Wickes Furniture I met Jeffrey Day from Covina. He was my soul mate and ardent admirer of my artwork. Jeff and I married in 1978. We spent a year starting up an interior design company focusing on murals. However, Disneyland had an opening for Park Decorator and I got the position with the Facilities Maintenance and Construction Division in December of 1978. I had 20 wonderful years designing window displays and props for animated sets. We helped the other part of our department with florals and event decoration installations. Christmas was the best! Loved decorating all the windows and buildings, Christmas trees and restaurant interiors. So much fun working with crazy artists every day. I later became Project Planner in the Construction group, scheduling craftsmen and contractors and managing budgets for maintenance on the attractions and facilities. For 3 years I was a manager of Training and Development for the 800 Craftsmen and women in the Division. Great fun using my teaching background with a bunch of creatively talented folks. The last 2 years of my 20 were in Tokyo with Publishing and Educational division of Marketing. I was liaison to a Japanese Book Publisher, buil...Expand for more
ding English language learning centers for 3- 8 year old children. Nihongo ga hanasemasu. (I can speak Japanese) Jeff and our cat came to live in Tokyo with me and my office was downtown. Again, great fun learning the language and traveling around the city to the school sites. The sushi was out of this world and the beer, second to none. Jeff and I traveled a lot. B&B's were our favorite and Santa Barbara had some special homes. We went to Great Britain several times and I even kissed the Blarney Stone; though I already had the gift of gab. Hawaii was a frequent destination along with Mexico and Canada. Loved the Southwest and Oregon where my family is from. After "retiring" from Disney I did a few years as Human Resource Manager in retail for Home Depot and Target. Yuck! Hours were horrible. We moved around a lot through that. Had houses in Half Moon Bay, Covina and Paso Robles. Sadly, my sweet Jeffrey passed away in 2007. Broke my heart. I went to visit my niece, Leann Lewis in Nashville and fell in love with all the green trees and country music. Moved to Smyrna, Tennessee in 2008 with my two cats; I had no children, not by choice. Was so much fun going to open mic nights. Even rented out my basement to the Robbie Walden Band. Was like having a bunch of high school boys living with me. In 2013 I met a man on Match.com and fell in love with his southern drawl and funny stories; redneck ones were the best. Jim Lindsey and I married that year and were happy for 6 years. We went elk hunting, hog hunting and even went trout fishing on our honeymoon. Our house had a nice garden and Jim was particularly fond of the tomatoes he grew. JIm passed away in 2013. I miss him every day. I got promoted to "Mamaw" when I married Jim and now have a daughter and two sons, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grand children! God has been good to me all my life. I now go to Clear Springs Baptist Church and teach art to adults and teens at the Knoxville Art and Fine Crafts Center. I stay busy sewing, painting and going to church activities. I am healthy and life is good. I am Blessed.
