Kathleen's Story

I'm going to be uncharacteristically lazy and use this story wizard since it looks like an idea I'd "borrow" to use with my students. 1) How do I hope old friends remember me? Truthfully, I don't really care because people change so much after adolescence they never seem to be anything like you remember them from high school. 2) I wanted to be an artist when I was growing up and I think that's what most people thought I would do as my career. Being an artist is part of who I am, but not what I do for a living. 3) Favorite ways to relax is anything creative I can do with my hands, reading, watching and discussing films. 4) Wildest thing I ever did in school is for me to know and for no one else to find out. 5) What I need to work (when I'm not AT work) is to be left alone and uninterrupted and no one moves or touches my stuff. That goes for spouses, children, friends, and students alike. 6) Heroes? My dad was probably my biggest hero. My inspiration comes from everywhere, I'm easily distracted. 7)Places I've lived: San Pedro, CA; Littleton, CO; Shell Beach, CA; Pismo Beach, CA; San Luis Obispo, CA; Boston, MA; Huntington Beach, CA (being near a major body of water is pretty important). 8) Who I'd like to meet again from my past would be Rene Cayabyab (Lovall), who, suddenly and tragically died much too young at barely 50. I think we were twins separated at birth. 9) Obsessions: My guiltiest pleasure is watching shows like "Top Chef" and all those other reality competition shows on Bravo. I'm total cinephile, though my teenage son wants to be the professional film critic. Another "obsession" is turning my house and garden into one big art project. It must be working, the neighbors come by for inspiration and children are drawn to it. 10) Biggest surprises in life? Having four children (triplet daughters in 1980 and a son in 1991) and becoming a high school teacher in mid-life. 11) My dream home: The one I live in now with a dedicated studio added on over the garage and the whole place moved up to San Luis Obispo or Shell Beach. 12) What I've learned from my kids: Patience, more than I ever thought possible. 13) Teacher I would love to see again would be Mrs. Keetch, my 9th grade English teacher. Her creativity, patience, and humor are still an inspiration to me as a teacher. 14) If I won $100 million: Set up college funds for the grandkids, buy a second home in Paris (because it's my second favorite place on earth), invest, travel with my husband and family, and always have the latest in cool technology (we have five Macs, I'm a geek). 15) Campus life: Never lived in a ...Expand for more
dorm or joined a sorority. Always lived off-campus, had a blast with my friends, found out I was really smart but have ADHD and mild dyslexia. 16) To be truly happy isn't a matter of where, doing what, and with whom. For me it's always knowing there's something new to learn and I've found how to never, ever be bored. 17) Current age is 54 and I don't recall thinking much about people in terms of chronological age when I was twelve. I just cared if they were interesting or not. 18) Working hard? Yes, always, I am a workaholic at whatever I do. Career aspirations include finishing my 2nd Master's degree (this one in Educational Technology), then go for the PhD, and then become the Orange County Department of Education's Ed Tech guru. 19) I have absolutely no idea what happened to my first crush. I'm not even sure who WAS my first crush. 20) My closest friends would tell you I'm funny, brilliant, creative, and energetic, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as hyper and a little eccentric. 21) No, I don't dress like I did decades ago. My style is best described as Banana Republic, with some goofy t-shirts thrown in. 22) The "weirdest" job I ever had was teaching high school Biology and Algebra in Compton, CA (yes, THAT Compton). That was more of an education for this white gal than it was for my students. It also gave me a hell of a lot of street cred with the students I work with now. 23) I share my home with my husband, my 16-year-old college student son (my kids are smarties), and two chubby guinea pigs, Juno and Posie (described by the aforementioned son as "stupidly cute"). 24) No trophies on the mantel. Big victory would be raising four kids I'm proud to have turned loose on the world. 25) I'm not sure I would take a "do-over," I might not like how it alters my life as it is now. 26) In ten years I hope to be retired and traveling. I'm going to get there by working my ass off until then and keeping up my investments. 27) With any friend, oldest or newest, we usually click because of a shared screwy sense of humor. 28) I don't know what would surprise everyone at my high school reunion. That I'm a high school teacher? Maybe that, considering how much I HATED school. 29) All those first jobs were summer jobs and not worth remembering more than that it was good to have some of my own walkin' around money as a kid. 30) Childhood memory I'll never forget...how on earth do I know what I will or will not forget over the next four decades? I'd guess that the last neurons to go will be those remembering anything having to do with the beach.
