Kathryn's Story
After high school, I was in and out of college several times trying to decide what I wanted be when I grew up. I spent some time living in NYC working with inner city kids, then moved to Illinois in 1975 when I married my husband Rob, who'd I'd met in one of my college stints. Almost 34 years later, we're still together, have 3 grown daughters and our first grandchild, a cute little guy who's the delight of my life.
Afer working many years in flower shops, like my parents, I finally decided to finish college and go into teaching. I was on a roll, so did my master's right after finishing my bachelor's (had to make up for lost time!). I earned undergrad degrees in counseling and English Education and a graduate degree in English, specializing in English as a Second Language. In the early nineties, I began teaching at Illinois State University's English Language Institute. I taught there until the fall of 2000, when I decided to switch to the public school system to work with immigrant families. I still teach in the Bloomington (IL) public schools and have done some adjunct work for the local community college as well.

ok classes through the U. of I. program to become a Master Gardener, and have co-chaired our county's childrens programs for the past two years. I've become a crazed gardener and head outside as soon as the ground begins to thaw and don't come back in until it freezes in the fall.
I still love music, and several years ago got into playing "old time" instruments, learning to play the hammered dulcimer and bowed psaltery. Last year, a group of us decided to get together to play, and it has grown into a 10 person band. We range in age from a 14 yr old jr. high student to a grandma (yeah, that would be me). It's especially fun for me since my youngest daughter Jen is in it as well. She is an amazing musician and plays 5 different instruments, just to brag on her a little!
Most of my family still lives either in or near Hobart, so we're home most holidays to see them. Although my family's old flower shop is gone (has been since our senior year), my brother now runs the greenhouses out on County Line Road, where my parents still live. I've lived in Illinois almost twice as long as I lived in Indiana, but still consider Hobart "home."
