Kathryn's Story
My life in a nutshell.......after Balboa, I spent a year at CCSF, trying to figure out what I wanted to do. My brother survived Viet Nam and came home and became an Army recruiter. I auditioned on my clarinet for the Army at the Prescedio and got a job in the WAC Band at the WAC training center in Anniston, Alabama. I was there for 6 1/2 years until they did away with the WAC (women's army corps) and it all became the Army. I was transfered to Japan where I served for 3 more years as a clarinet and sax player with the 296th Army Band at Camp Zama, Honshu Japan.
It's now 1979 and my tour with Japan ended and they were going to send me to Fort Bliss, Texas. I decided instead, to get out of the Army and go to school so, I went to Ricks College (now called BYU, Idaho) for a year and transferred to the U of Idaho at Moscow Idaho. I majored in Music Education and graduated with a Bach. in Mus Ed,,Instrumental.
It's now 1985 and I moved from Moscow Idaho to a cattle ranch near Lewiston Idaho on the Snake River, where I helped a family raise and sell herford cattle. Yes, I rode horses, branded cows...Expand for more
and fixed fence and built corrals and all the fun stuff that comes with being a rancher. I had a free place to live and all the animals I wanted, which was heaven for me since I wasn't allowed to have pets where I grew up in San Francisco.
I spent 22 years at the ranch, where I supported myself by teaching strings and then subbing throughout the years in the nearby towns of Lewiston Idaho and Clarkston WA. In 1990, I joined an Air National Guard band in Spokane Washington, and so became a weekend warrior musician for 20 years. Every summer, I went to a different country with this band, which enriched my life.....I never expected to travel again after the Army. I spent 20 years in the National Guard and thus, was able to get a military retirement. I left the ranch in 2007 to come to Colorado Springs and take care of my elderly mom. I lived with her until she passed in 2009, then stayed. I still substitute teach here and love to take trips to the mountains. The picture of me was taken in October of 2012 at the ranch in Idaho. I'm now 62. Peace to all who read this story. Kathryn Nelson
