Kathryn's Story
After high school, I went to Montclair State where I majored in chemistry. During my senior year, I met my future husband, Stan, and I interned at Ciba-Geigy pharmaceuticals.
After I finished my undergrad degree, I continued working at C-G as a Quality Assurance scientist. I developed methods used for cleaning validation of manufacturing equipment, sampled the equipment, and reported the results. Stan and I continued to date, even though he moved up to New Haven in 1994. After QA, I moved to analytical research & developement, working in that department through the merger with Sandoz, when we became Novartis.
In 1996, Stan and I got engaged. In 1997, I became a technical writer, writing the monographs used for testing in the QA labs. In 1998, Stan and I got married. Somewhere in there, he quit his job at Yale to move back to the NY metro area. Betw...Expand for more
een 1993 and 1997, I went PT to MSU for my master's degree in chemistry (C-G/Novartis paid for that).
In 2000, Stan and I moved to a lovely home back in Sussex County. In November 2001, we welcomed our first child, Vanessa into the world. In May 2003, Caroline joined us. When I went back to work after maternity leave, I was laid off from Novartis. I guess that I picked a bad day to return.
I decided to go alternate route to become a high school chemistry teacher. In September 2004, I started teaching chemistry and pharmacology at Leonia high school. In June 2005, I left Leonia, for a teaching position in Jefferson (about 10 minutes from home). I love teaching. It is so much more fulfilling than working in pharmaceuticals. Of course, the pay isn't as great, but the trade off is that I can be 10 minutes from home and spend summers with the kids.
