Kathy's Story
Life
Immediately following high school I attended St. Mary's School of Practical Nursing. In August 1972 I married Jim Zell, class of '70. After he graduated from college we moved to Toledo, Ohio. By the time I was 24 we had 3 children, so our early years were taken up by the responsibilities of parenting. Those were good years!! I'm proud of the work Jim and I did as parents. We now have 3 wonderful, independent adult children, all college graduates.
We've lived in New Strawn, KS--a little town of about 300--since 1979. Not much going on here, but it's been a great place to raise kids. I feel fortunate that I was able to stay at home with my children for many years. For 10 years I worked for our local school district as a computer lab aide with grades K-2, so 9 months a year my days were filled with the little ones I've always loved. For 3 years I've been a volunteer at our local hospital and a member if its auxiliary group. I've served as treasurer and as president. Our group runs the hospital gift shop, which means that I can now chalk up ret...Expand for more
ail and retail management to my list of life experiences.
When our youngest child left for college Jim and I bought a tandem bicycle, and I am a 4-time veteran of Biking Across Kansas. I'm always in awe when I stand at the Missouri River and realize that I've just ridden a bike 500 miles!! We also spent a couple of our recent vacations in the mountains of Colorado learning the art of backpacking, something I never pictured myself doing. Our local school's mission statement includes the words "life-long learner". I like to think of myself as that.
July 7, 2005 marked the beginning of a crossroads in my life. My husband Jim had a massive coronary and I became a widow. This is one learning experience I could have done without. Our last 5 years together were full of weddings and grandbabies, and I'm grateful he lived to see our children all happily married. I'm also grateful that he knew the joy of being a grandpa. Now, after 32 years of marriage, I move forward as a single person. This was not in my life plan, and I'm still learning to do it well:)
