Kathy's Story
I am married to Richard "Flip" Minton. We have been married 28 years and live in West Frankfort, IL. We have 2 children, Kathryn age 25 and Richard age 21. I have been a 911 dispatcher for 30 years. I started with the Perry County Sheriff's Dept 1978-1981. I presently work for the West Frankfort Police Dept, I have been here for 25 years. I am also the Records Clerk for our department. My husband is an Investigator with the Franklin County Sheriff's Dept, he has been there for 29 years as a dispatcher, deputy sheriff and now investigator specializing in computer forensics. Our daughter Katie is a Systems Analyst with Pepsi MidAmerica in Marion and our Son Richie is a 911 dispatcher with Carbondale Police Dept. We have 3 dogs, Dodger age 17-mixed breed, Millie age 5 chocolate mini dachshund and Poot age 3 a black & tan mini dachshund. We have a "herd" of cats...Elvie age 10-Main Coon, Miss Ray age 10 & Elvie's sister, Susie Q, Pickle, Ginger, and the outside kitties Miss Mama, Milo, Shadow and Gizmo. I love Criters! I have Fibromyalgia, was diagnosed in 1999. Doctor says I have had it all my life, as most of you remember I had a hard time staying in school, that is why. le. I have tried every medication avail, even some prescribed off label nothing has helped. I had a small stoke while taking Lyrica 2 years ago, thankfully no lasting effects. I know a lot of people thought I was "faking" or skipping class. I wasn't, I was at home in pain and all the doctors told me it was growing pains. It wasn't, it was Fibromyalgia! I am adopted, I found my birth mother several years ago and she has Fibromyalgia too, it is hereditary. I also have Osteoarthritis in my spine, Anemia and degenerative disk disease.
I got a GED and went on to college. I attended John A Logan College where I was on the Pom Pom Squad my first year. I took business classes but did not finish. Stupidly I left school and took a job as a dispatcher. Because of the problems I had in school I stressed education to my children. Both were in Honors classes, Gifted programs, Scholar Bowl, and Katie was a State Scholar. She was awarded the SIU Computer Science Dept Scholarship and the Dean's Scholarship. Richie graduated from JALC with an associate degree in Criminal Justice. He was selected as a peer tutor both years. I may not have gone very far but I made sure my children did.
My mother (adopted) suffered from Alzheimers.She lived with us for over 10 years.
