Kathy's Story

Life I still live in Redding in the same house I've lived in since kindergarten. I went to Shasta College after Shasta High and earned an AA degree in Sociology before transferring to CSU Chico, where I earned my BA degree in Community Services - Gerontology (the study of aging) Just think of "Geritol," and you can remember. I also completed all the coursework for a MPA degree in Public Administration, but didn't finish my thesis in the allotted time. I got bored and frustrated, and generaly burnt out on school. Plus I had a lot of stuff going on in my family at the time too. My favorite grandmother, whom I was very close to suddenly passed away just before Christmas 1984, following surgery. This was the first death of a close relative I had experienced. I was hired on full time at Golden Umbrella, a non-profit multi-purpose senior center where I had completed my internship for my BA degree. I was the youngest person on staff and was the Program Manager supervising a staff of 8 senior outreach social workers. When the agency expanded, I helped write the grant for Shasta County's first Adult Day Healthcare Center (ADHC) I served as Program Director of the ADHC program and supervised a staff of 20. In 1989, I lost my grandfather, and a mere year later, my father passed away at age 57 following complications from open heart surgery. I had moved home after college, so I was there for my Mom, and we became very close best friends. Over the ensuing years I worked 9 years as Director of Social Services at Shasta Healthcare, a 185 bed skilled nursing & rehab center, and then worked in the same capacity at Canyonwood Nursing & Rehab Center until Nov. 2007, when I lost my job due to "corporate housekeeping." Myself and two other middle managers were "relieved" from our jobs. I lost my Mom quite suddenly and unexpectedly in Feb. 2003. At 67, while getting ready for work, she dropped dead at home from either a massive heart attack or stroke. You certainly don't ever expect to do CPR on your mother. n very hard for me. I feel like an orphan, even though I have a younger brother living locally who is divorced with 4 kids that live out of the area. We have never been close. I am still single, never married, and no kids. Just haven't found the right guy yet. I enjoy scenic photography, reading, movies, travel, music, live theater, ballroom dancing (a bit hard without a partner). I collect stuffed teddy bears since college and lost count at 1000. I also collect seashells and have a collection of frog princes that people have given me. It sort of started out as a joke, and just sort of grew from there. I love history, and have started collecting estate fine jewelry. I especially like pieces that have a story or known history to them. Unfortunately, this is not an inexpensive endeavor. Some of my favorite places include the N. Calif. coast, especially Ferndale and Trinidad; and I like the historic districts of Sacramento and Old Folsom, as well as Nevada City. I like to consider myself a hopeful romantic, and I haven't yet given up on finding a man who doesn't mind that I have very few domestic household talents, and a lack of maternal instincts. Also in my spare time I've become pretty lucky at writing winning themes for local parades and community events. I started in 1986 when I won the theme for Redding's Centennial celebration. My theme was "Preserving the Past, Preparing for the Future," which netted a prize of $200. In all I've won 18 theme contests in all, most recently for the Redding Rodeo Parade in May 2008. My theme is: " Treasures of the Old West." I won $100 and got to ride in the parade as a guest of honor. In the past I have had all of my four nieces and nephews ride with me on my previous four wins in the Rodeo Parade. This year I rode alone. I'd love to hear from any fellow classmates out there. Since I just entered the computer age, I'm having a blast surfing the net. So if you remember me, or even if you don't feel free to send me an email. I promise to respond to all contacts I receive.
