Kathy's Story

Life I was a soldier...I am a soldier...I will always be a soldier. I have recently retired from the United States Army after 25 years. These were awesome years and I had the career I have always dreamed of...fun, exciting, and very full of surprises. But I suffered a stroke during my last deployment, thus, ending my career. I am now working as a Senior Logistics Engineer for a Defense Contractor here in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. I have a lifetime partner and four wonderful children. My oldest has just graduated from college and my youngest has just started fourth grade. Life is definately full of surprises. I truly miss those friends from the past who have helped build me and mold me into the person that I am now. I have no regrets and no bad memories. I would like to touch base with those who remember me.... School I had the biggest crush on my sixth grade social studies teacher, Kathy Surenda and my high school guidance counselor, Denise Boshier (but could never have told them, of course). Sister Margaret Winchester was my favorite of all time teachers, though. Sister Lynn Tooma was my biggest inspiration along with Ms. Boshier. Having Lisa Gambino carry my drunk butt off the school bus one morning while Ms. Boshier and Sister Margaret hide me all day in the guidance office til I sobered up was a fond memory I recall from Keough. From Deer Park, I recall being beat up by the bully's and having my notebook popped on a regular basis. I remember being afraid to walk home and hanging out after school with the teachers until it was safe to walk home. From Randallstown, I remember going to the railroad tracks every morning at the vo-tech and cutting class in the afterno...Expand for more
ons at RHS. College College was a part time venture for me over the many years that I was in the service...so I don't really have any college experiences that jump out at me. But I did make one incredible friend, Kasey Edison...and I had one heck of an awesome English Teacher, Jody Nusholtz. Workplace Working as a senior logistician after all of my years in the Army, has it's ups and downs...I love the guys I work with, I love the job, but I miss the military itself. Most of the guys I work with are retired from the military and we can share that part of ourselves and relate because of it. And it truly is nice to finally have a 8 to 5 weekday work week with very little travel. Makes for raising a family a little easier. Military After 25 years, it seems strange that I woudn't have much to say about the military...except it was my life. I would bleed green if you cut me. I recall Ms. Boshier throwing my notebook down on the floor in her guidance office and her screaming at me one day. I told her that I was going to enlist in the army and she laughed and told me that I couldn't even wear my uniform to school each day...how was I going to wear a uniform every day of my life!!! But I did...and I think that she is one of the reasons that I did...I didn't want to disappoint her or Sister Margaret. Sister Lynn wrote to me for a while...I think it amazed her that I was going to make a career of it. I miss her...she was quite an inspiration. I saw the world, I made lots of new friends, I was damned good at what I did, and I still am. I am very proud of my career and all that I've accomplished over the years. I would do it all again ONLY if I knew then what I know now. HOOAH!!!
