Kathy's Story

For the school record, in 1950 I started K at Quaker Hill Elementary (CT) and attended through the 4th grade. 5th found our family in Old Lyme, with attendance at OL Schools through Freshman year (1959-60). From there we moved to Niantic and I finished HS at New London High School. Colleges have been several (Paire School of Art, Bridgeport U, U of A at Tucson, U of CA at Riverside) as I moved around the country until graduating from Cal State Bakersfield in 1978. Think I'll update at the beginning of my background story, since current creations and work are much more interesting than used-to-be-s. This weekend (November 1+) will be the last art show of this year through the Desert Art League. Hurray!! I've wanted to be in this show for several years and also glad it's the last for a while. Won best of show at our little County Fair in September, and since it's the very first such event entered, will count it as a success beyond hope. The next show will be in May, the Bakersfield Jazz Festival's Artists' tent; our 4th year and we all like the event. Am working in new designs and sizes, very different from those around our area. Living, working and showing in a small community makes individuality of work a must. Designs are Art Nouveau and Art Deco in style, while the construction is called shields. These are fairly large curved panels or plaques, which can be hung on a wall or over a light fixture, or placed either in or out doors. They are such fun to make and glaze and the results are gratifying. I'm also working with off centered extrusions to make softly fluid forms reminding one of water life shapes. Lots of fun. As soon as I get caught up on some functional To-Do's I'm also going to work more with Copper, both sheet and wire. An art form called Fold Forming can be used to make wonderfully beautiful pieces both large and small. Am looking forward to this challenge. Hope everyone's year is still going well or getting much better. Talk later. ******************************************************************** Background: I've morphed into a desert rat (Mojave Desert), with spatterings of tropical island life thrown in for variety. bs, careers and more jobs have been my pattern -- its been mostly very good. In the late 60's my two daughters came along and for a while settled down was the format. After college completion, teaching, and girls mostly grown, I met my favorite adult person and we flew off to Micronesia for the next 8 years. Now back for the last 15 years, Stu (fav person) has built a kit helicopter and is building a second one. In order to to be involved too -- I never have stayed home well, we started a magazine for experimental helicopters and are about to begin our 7th year of publication. Yes, this is a miniscule market, but its passionate about itself. Seven years ago, I returned to ceramics/pottery and now work as much in my studio as on this computer. Often, I'd rather throw mud at my wheel than eat or sleep, so this is a very pleasing experience. Update: Wrote that 2 plus years ago and in the interim much has altered. We closed the magazine in the fall of 2011, both of us having lots of projects waiting in the wings. Stu has really dived into the difficult work finishing his turbine helicopter, modifying it as he goes. I'm continuing clay work but expanding outward, moving to more handbuilding and adding metal as a decorative aspect to more sculptural pieces. My favorite accomplishment is a ceramic and copper piece made specifically for limited sight and blind individuals, encouraging art experience through sound and touch. It's now on tour around Kern County museums and galleries along with other pieces made for this show. This turned into a collaborative work with Stu, which made it even more fun. A sculpture class has my ongoing attention this year with a wide range of projects in which to learn and experience using a variety of tools and metals. A current project begins with twisting 20" of rebar wire into an abstract shape, followed by making that same shape out of a 20' of 1/2" rebar. We're exceptionally lucky to continue to have the local Jr. College with a good arts program even in this economically crazy time. So, it's off to my studio with a new design for a large outdoor container. We're big on xeroscaping here in the desert and at least two of our local shows are requesting exhibitors to have "yard art" -- and I do not mean gnomes.
