Kathy's Story

Life After graduation, went to business school in Delaware and, after graduation, worked for a law firm for 10 years. Got married, had two children (boy and girl) and was a stay-at-home Mom. Got divorced in 1990 and moved back to Ashland. Have worked for the past 15 years at Pioneer Tunnel. My daughter is 31 and married, is a kindergarten teacher near Lewisburg. I have two beautiful grandsons (ages 2 and 4) and my daughter is expecting her third child in the summer. My son is 28, just married in October, and is a behavioral specialist working with autistic children. I'm very proud of them and enjoy spending time with them. I'm involved with several community organizations including the Ashland Downtown Revitalization project. We're hoping to restore some of our historic buildings and bring Ashland back to the way it was. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family, listening to oldies, reading, antiquing, and spending quiet time. (When you work at a tourist attraction, "quiet times" are few and far between!) I love reuniting and keeping in touch with old friends. School Ah, the memories. Too numerous to mention. I'd go back to good old Ashland High School in a heartbeat. Life was so much simpler then. What I most remember are the football and basketball games (cheerleading), the school spirit we all had, dances and proms under the mirrored ball in the gym, and great friends. I don't think there were "cliques" back then. It seemed like we were friends with everyone and still remain that way. I remember going to the Roxy, walking Center Street in snowstorms, hanging out at Jake's and the "Loon," and going to the Girardville dances and "the Lake." Cruising "the route" (Ashland ...Expand for more
to Girardville) was a highlight of a night out. Oh, how could I forget the drive-in! Then, of course, who could forget Tom Dando and Marty Dwyer's pranks which drove the teachers nuts. Great memories and hard to believe it was SO LONG AGO ! College Went to Goldey Beacom Jr. College in Wilmington, Delaware, from '65 to '67. Graduated with an associate degree as a legal secretary. All I can say is, it was pure culture shock moving from little old Ashland to the big city. I lived in an old Victorian house that was converted into a dorm. Did make a lot of friends, but it was tough adjusting to being around "city kids." As much as I wanted to experience life away from Ashland, I ended up coming home most of the time on weekends. So much for independence. It's not what it's cracked up to be! Workplace After college, I worked for 10 years as a legal secretary to the senior partner of a large law firm. I loved it. My boss was a patent litigation attorney and I met a lot of interesting people from around the world. After I got married and had children, I didn't work until I moved back to Ashland. Worked for my brother for 5 years at his funeral home as a secretary. I really loved the job but it was only part-time. Got offered the job at Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and have been here now for almost 15 years. I'm the business manager and my job is year-round. It's a very busy place, even off-season, and I work a lot of hours. I do meet a lot of people from all over the U.S. and many foreign countries. It's amazing how many people come from all over to visit here and take the tours. My Life Now: Seems to be more hectic than ever. So much for the "golden years." Don't plan to retire any time soon.
